Guardian Scholars Begin New Educational Journey at CSUF

Cal State Fullerton has welcomed 14 former foster youth to the campus as this year’s class of incoming Guardian Scholars. The Guardian Scholars program awards former foster youth a full scholarship to the university and provides additional assistance to help them succeed in their educational endeavors. The program is a working partnership between the private sector and public agencies.

URI Receives Grant for Arctic Expedition Aboard Tall Ship

The University of Rhode Island has received a $3 million grant from the National Science Foundation to conduct an expedition into the Canadian Arctic's Northwest Passage aboard the country's newest tall ship. The university's Graduate School of Oceanography's Inner Space Center will lead the five-week expedition, which begins next August.

CUNY Making It Easier for Students to Register to Vote

The City University of New York, in consultation with the New York City Board of Elections, is providing CUNY students with personalized voter registration forms effective Sept. 5. All of the standard identifying fields – such as name, address and birthdate -- will be automatically filled in from information students have already entered into the University’s database.

Michigan Secretary of State Office Holds College Voter Tour

The office of Michigan Secretary of State Ruth Johnson is kicking off a tour of 18 college campuses across the state to register students to vote. The Republican says in a statement that the 3,000-mile "2016 Voter Registration Drive" by the Mobile Office offers access to services including voter registration. Officials will be on hand to answer other questions as well.

Eva Graham was appointed Institute Diversity Officer at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). She will also serve as the Institute’s Title IX coordinator. Her career in higher education has been grounded in the theory and practices for creating access and promoting diversity and student success in science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM) education.

With Senate Talks Falling Short, Shutdown Enters Workweek [Beyond Education]

The Senate inched closer but ultimately fell short of an agreement that would have reopened federal agencies before the beginning of the workweek. Under the proposal taking shape, Democrats would agree to a three-week spending measure — until Feb. 8 — in return for a commitment from the Republican leadership in the Senate to address immigration policy and other pressing legislative matters in the coming weeks.

U of Illinois Developing Models to Test Grid Protection

The University of Illinois says it has received an $18.7 million federal grant to develop a way to test the United States' response to and recovery from any attack on the country's electric grid. The university said Tuesday that the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency awarded the grant.
