California Gov. Jerry Brown is crystal clear that his National Guard will help President Trump go after drugs and thugs on the Mexican border, but not immigrants. Drawing that line may be hazy. Brown's pledge of 400 troops allows the president to boast that governors in all four border states back his mission to send the Guard on its third large-scale deployment since 2006.

Trump Administration Pauses Legal Orientation For Immigrants [Beyond Education]

Immigrant advocates are outraged by a U.S. government decision to put on hold a program that helps tens of thousands of immigrants navigate the country's complex immigration court system. The $8 million-a-year program that provides legal orientation to immigrants in deportation proceedings is on hold pending review, according to the U.S. Department of Justice, which oversees immigration courts.

Trump Pardons Former Cheney Aide Scooter Libby [Beyond Education Breaking News]

President Donald Trump issued a full pardon Friday to I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, a former top aide to Vice President Dick Cheney. Trump said he does not know Libby, but "for years I have heard that he has been treated unfairly. Hopefully, this full pardon will help rectify a very sad portion of his life," according to a statement issued by White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons announced that it will launch a sweeping scholarship program in the coming academic year – several years ahead of schedule – that will make it the first medical school in the nation to replace student loans with scholarships for all students who qualify for financial aid.

Marshall, WVU Law School Launch Consumer Rights Project [Education News]

Marshall University is launching a joint project with West Virginia University College of Law to provide consumer-related information for people in West Virginia. Each school received $1 million to implement the programs. The Joint Consumer Assistance Project was established by lawyers involved in a consumer class action case from funds not claimed by class members.

US Says California Rejects Proposed Border Duties For Troops [Beyond Education]

The Trump administration said Monday that California Gov. Jerry Brown rejected terms of the National Guard's initial deployment to the Mexican border, but a state official said nothing was decided. "The governor determined that what we asked for is unsupportable, but we will have other iterations," Ronald Vitiello, U.S. Customs and Border Protection's acting deputy commissioner, told reporters in Washington.

Northwest Iowa College Gets $6M Gift For Science Building [Education News]

Northwestern College says it's received a $6 million gift for its new science building, the largest single gift in school history. The $24.5 million building will be named for benefactors Jack and Mary DeWitt, who live in Holland, Michigan. The building will have classrooms, laboratories and faculty offices for the college's biology, chemistry and nursing department, as well as space for student-faculty research.

Virginia Commonwealth University and state Secretary of Public Safety and Homeland Security Brian Moran are set to host a forum on school safety. The April 23 event in Richmond will focus on how officials can assess and investigate potential threats at schools. Moran will also moderate a panel about the roles of school resource officers.

Barbara Bush gave the commencement address at the all-women Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts, on June 1, 1990. The speech was ranked No. 47 on a list of the top speeches of the century in 1999. The list, compiled by researchers at the University of Wisconsin and Texas A&M University, was based on a survey of scholars who ranked speeches by social and political impact and rhetorical artistry.
