University Of Utah Reassigns Grad Assistant Over Gun Policy

The University of Utah has reassigned a graduate assistant who was teaching a class at the school because of statements she made about bringing a concealed carry gun to class. The grad assistant stated that it “is absurd, antisocial, and frightening behavior,” and that if any of her students brought a concealed carry gun to class, she would force them to stand in a “3x3 taped square.”

Job News: Oklahoma Approves Record Number Of Emergency Teachers

The Oklahoma Board of Education approved 916 emergency certificates for non-traditionally trained teachers. This increases the total number of approved certificates to 2,153 for the 2018-19 school year. The state’s superintendent of public instruction has said that Oklahoma is "now experiencing the full weight" of the teacher shortage.

Tuition Plan Seeks To End Flight Of Students To Other States

Illinois Commitment, a University of Illinois program, is offering free tuition and fees to qualified in-state students to encourage them to go to college in state. Families of eligible students must have an income that is below $61,000 annually, and the free tuition and fees will cover eight semesters.

California Closer To Making Colleges Offer Abortion Drugs

The California Assembly has approved a measure, which would require all public universities in California to offer abortion medication at the health centers on their campuses. This measure still needs to return to the Senate for a final sign off. If passed, this would make California the first state to have this requirement.

Cal State LA Celebrates 50th Anniversary Of Chicano Studies Program

California State University Los Angeles (Cal State LA) established the first Chicano studies program in the nation 50 years ago. Back then, around four percent of students were Mexican American, and the program only had four courses. Valuing the history, culture and contributions of Mexican Americans, the program now offers over 150 courses.
