In lieu of a dry lecture on the wonders of electromagnetism, a team of Rice University students built a contraption that combines elements of an automotive solenoid and a pinball machine for the Children's Museum of Houston.
In the spring of 2016, 15 students from New Orleans earned their high school degrees while simultaneously earning a certificate of technical studies (CTS) after attending a technical skills expo (TSE) hosted by Delgado Community College. Graduates included eight students from Grace King High School and seven males from Warren Easton Charter High School. Affectionately known as the "Super Seven" across the country, the Warren Easton graduates challenged each other to join the dual enrollment program together. Beginning their junior year, the Super Seven and Grace King students attended both high school classes and Delgado courses. Through countless study groups and collaborative support they were able to balance dual enrollment and successfully completed the program.
A study released today by NCLR (National Council of La Raza) and the Population Reference Bureau (PRB) highlights improvements over the last 15 years in Latino child well-being, as shown by key indicators such as high school graduation rates, juvenile incarceration, health coverage and teen pregnancy. However, the report also notes that there are still high rates of poverty, obesity and a lack of reading proficiency among Latino youth. The report, “Toward a More Equitable Future: The Trends and Challenges Facing America’s Latino Children,” provides an in-depth analysis using data from the Latino Kids Database Explorer, which offers quick and easy access to national and state-by-state statistics on 18.2 million Latino children—95 percent of whom are U.S. citizens.
A team of researchers led by Wayne State University expects to get $15.7 million over five years for work related to the health and well-being of adolescents and young adults with HIV or at risk for HIV infection. The funding for the "Scale it Up" project is from the National Institute of Child and Human Development of the National Institutes of Health.
The Trump administration would consider immigration legislation that includes a pathway to citizenship for hundreds of thousands of young people, the U.S. Homeland Security secretary said Tuesday, while emphasizing no decision on that issue has been made and a border wall remains the priority. Congress is considering three options, including citizenship or permanent legal status for people who were temporarily shielded from deportation, Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said in an interview.
A Tulane University professor is getting a $3.7 million, three-year military grant to help develop computing technology. The university announced Tuesday that professor Michael Mislove, chair of Tulane's computer science department, received the grant from the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research. The research grant is aimed at creating new technology related to quantum computing, specifically targeting the development of programming languages for quantum computers.
Wilshire Law Firm has launched its nationwide, bi-annual scholarship program. Students can now send application materials, until June 30, 2018. This program awards one law student for their outstanding contribution to the community and top academic achievements.
A massive winter storm swept from the Carolinas to Maine on Thursday, dumping snow along the coast and bringing strong winds that will usher in possible record-breaking cold. Places where the National Weather Service has issued blizzard warnings include the Delmarva Peninsula, which includes parts of Delaware, Virginia and Maryland; coastal New Jersey; eastern Long Island, New York; and coastal eastern New England.
Rasmussen College, a regionally accredited private college, announced the opening of its brand new Mankato campus. The single-story facility includes large, high-tech classrooms, new computer labs and simulation equipment, updated health sciences and nursing labs as well as expanded student learning and faculty spaces. The new Mankato campus is now open to students with classes beginning this week.
The Iowa Department of Education and U.S. Department of Education annually compile lists of subjects with teacher shortages. In the 1990s, there was only one school year when Spanish teachers for grades 7-12 didn't make that list. Since then, when the national category was broadened to all foreign languages, there were only two years — 2013-14 and 2014-15 — when a shortage of foreign language teachers in Iowa was not found.
The University of Maine at Augusta is set to offer the state's first university-level course in operating unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones. The noncredit class is open to the public, not just UMaine-Augusta students. The school plans to offer a comprehensive series of courses that will prepare students for the FAA examinations required to become a licensed drone pilot.
The University of Illinois plans a vigil Tuesday to support the victims of two shootings on campus. Four people were injured in the shootings and one man, 22-year-old George Korchev of Mundelein, was killed. Police say the first shooting killed Korchev and injured three people outside a party on campus. None of the four was part of the disagreement or party.
The University of Louisville is holding a presidential debate watch party for millennials. The school says in a statement the watch party will begin at 8 p.m. Monday at Ekstrom Library's Chao Auditorium on the Belknap Campus. Millennial voters and the general public are invited to attend.
Norco College received notification this week of a renewal award for its National Center for Supply Chain Automation (SCA). The five-year $4 million award will allow Norco College’s SCA to continue its work and expand into 19 states with the greatest concentration of supply chain activity.
The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation announced that author Maggie Nelson is among the 23 MacArthur Fellows for 2016. Chair of the Creative Writing Program in the School of Critical Studies at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), Nelson will receive a “genius award” of $620,000. Nelson received a B.A. from Wesleyan University and a Ph.D. from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.
