Pope Wraps up Chile Stop with Visit to Migrants, on to Peru [Beyond Education]

Pope Francis wraps up his Chile visit Thursday by meeting with members of the South American nation's booming immigrant community, who are flocking to the region's strongest and most stable economy but are increasingly the focus of political and social discontent. Francis is going to the northern city of Iquique before heading to Peru for the final leg of his two-nation trip.

Higher Education Student in US Illegally Free after Weeks in Custody

A University of California, Berkeley student has been released after nearly three weeks in an immigration facility near the U.S.-Mexico border. His attorney says Luis Mora was released unconditionally from the Otay Mesa Detention Facility on Wednesday. Officials say Mora overstayed his visa while visiting the U.S. from Colombia as a child and is not authorized to be in the country.

Education Officials: Thousands of Skilled Jobs Are Going Unfilled [Job News]

Education officials say 7,000 science, technology, engineering and math jobs are going unfilled each year in Idaho due to a lack of skilled workers. In a presentation to the state Legislature's joint budget committee, STEM Action Center Director Angela Hemingway says about $24 million in state tax revenue would have been generated if the jobs were filled.

College students and parents in southwest Ohio are being warned to watch out for scammers seeking to rip people off through fake scholarship and tax schemes. There are three popular scams circulating: a federal student tax scam, a fake grant and a fake scholarship scam.

Universities Awarded Grants to Study Harmful Algae Blooms

The state Department of Environmental Quality awarded Oakland University $158,314 to produce harmful algae hazard maps that can be continually updated. Grand Valley State University was given $83,573 to find methods for rapidly determining whether certain types of algae are producing toxins at the cellular level.

Bryant U's Men's Basketball Team Safe in Italy after Earthquake

Officials say Bryant University's men's basketball team is safe and unharmed in Italy after a 6.2-magnitude earthquake rocked three regions of the country earlier this week. Tremors from the quake woke the Bulldogs coaching staff and players at their hotel in Rome when it struck at about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday. The team is currently touring Italy for a series of exhibition games.

Auburn Alumni Association Helps Recreate Landmark Ice Cream Shop

A building resembling the old ice cream shop, popularly known as "Sani-Flush" or "The Flush," has been constructed at the Auburn Alumni Center and will serve ice cream from Opelika's O-Town Ice Cream. The new building was created by the Auburn Alumni Association and the College of Architecture, Design and Construction. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for the replica at the Alumni Center on Tuesday.

Cal State System Pushing Students to Graduate in 4 Years

Incoming freshmen at a recent orientation at California State University, Sacramento were greeted with a "Class of 2020" welcoming banner and administrators wearing green-and-white buttons reading: "Ask me how to finish in four." The buttons represent a mission aimed at improving dismal four-year completion rates not just at that campus but throughout the California State University system.

Vincennes University Opens New $4M Student Center Complex

Vincennes University students who resume fall classes this week will be able to explore the campus' new $4 million student center that includes fireplaces, a sports lounge and a bowling center. The newly finished student center opened Thursday in Vincennes, located about 40 miles north of Evansville. Fall classes begin at the school Monday.

University's 1st Year Law Students Take on 17 Local Projects

Nearly 200 first-year law students at the University of South Carolina are heading to 17 locations around Columbia to take part in efforts to serve the local community. Friday's event marks the eighth year incoming students take part in such an effort, which Dean Rob Wilcox calls a hallmark of the School of Law's education.

Giangreco brings more than 35 years of professional experience in both ministerial and corporate leadership roles, as well as personal interest in the Fund’s mission.

Civil Engineering Professor Erik Coats Receives Prestigious Wastewater Award

University of Idaho civil engineering professor Erik Coats has been selected to receive the 2016 Eddy Wastewater Principles/Processes Medal by the Water Environment Federation, a technical and educational organization representing water quality professionals and associations from around the world. Coats will accept the award at the Water Environment Federation’s (WEF) Creating the Future of Water technical exhibition and conference in New Orleans Sept. 27, 2016.
