Clinton Foundation Leader Donna Shalala and Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney to Receive Awards; City Council Speaker Melissa Mark Viverito to Keynote at the 11th Annual CUNY/New York Times Women’s Leadership Conference
Clinton Foundation President and Chief Executive Officer Donna Shalala will deliver a keynote address and receive a special award from James B. Milliken, Chancellor of the City University of New York, at the 11th annual Women’s Leadership Conference, to be held at Hunter College on Friday, October 30, 2015. Women at the forefront of New York politics, nonprofits, business, media and higher education will attend, address and lead discussions at the event, “Skills Building for Public and Community Service,” sponsored by CUNY and The New York Times Knowledge Network and aimed at encouraging, mentoring and supporting women student leaders. Shalala, the nation’s longest-serving U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services during President Bill Clinton’s two terms, also served as President of Hunter College, Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and President of the University of Miami, and was awarded the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, by President George W. Bush in 2008.
New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, who recently launched and will co-chair The Young Women’s Initiative to combat racial inequality and improve outcomes for women in education, economic development, healthcare and the justice system, will deliver the luncheon keynote. Congressmember Carloyn Maloney will receive The Women’s Leadership Award for her longtime advocacy of women’s rights and social justice. State and City legislators will make presentations on their experiences in facing the challenges of public and community service. The Conference is chaired by York College President Marcia Keizs and panel moderators will include CUNY’s women college presidents and senior executives.
The 2015-2016 CUNY Women’s Public Service Interns, college students who placed this year in internships with female members of Congress, New York State legislators and New York City Council members, will be formally recognized at the opening session before they proceed to the scheduled sessions, which include “Introduction to Centered Leadership,” presented by Joanna Barsh, Director Emeritus at McKinsey &Company. At the luncheon session, Executive Vice Chancellor and University Provost Vita Rabinowitz and Susan Mills, Managing Director, Education, at The New York Times, will deliver greetings.
