Trending Physician Diversity Where You Live

Health Care August 2019
The looming Physician shortage exasperates another obstacle to quality care for all.

As the nation becomes more diverse, more Physicians representing a variety of racial and ethnic groups are needed to serve those populations. Since there is data to suggest that Physicians tend to practice in the same area where they attended medical college, the diversity of the medical schools in your state could determine how diverse the Physician workforce will be in the future where you live. Here’s a state by state comparison of how diverse the medical school graduates of the class of 2018 were.

Source: Courtesy of AAMC, Data and Analysis, Total Graduates by U.S. Medical School and Race and Ethnicity (Alone), 2016-2018

The data displays the racial and ethnic characteristics of graduates of U.S. medical schools in 2017-2018. The “Multiple Race/Ethnicity” category includes those who selected more than one race/ethnicity response. Table does not include graduates from schools of osteopathic medicine. List does not include Alaska, Delaware, Idaho, Maine, Montana and Wyoming since there are no Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accredited M.D. programs in those states.
