Arkansas Senate Approves Immigrant In-State Tuition Measure

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — The Arkansas Senate has voted to extend in-state tuition rates at state colleges and universities to some immigrant students.

The Senate voted 18-7 Wednesday for the proposal to allow the schools to extend the rate to the students if they've lived in the state at least three years prior to admission and have graduated from a high school or received a general equivalency diploma in the state.

The measure applies to students whose parents are here on temporary work visas, immigrants of the Marshall Islands, or here under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program that allows those brought to the U.S. illegally as children to remain in the country.

The bill now heads back to the House. Past efforts to extend in-state tuition have faltered in the Legislature.
