The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has awarded Tulane University a new $2.8 million grant. The grant will allow investigators Dr. Jiang He from Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, and Drs. Jing Chen and Lee Hamm of Tulane University School of Medicine to continue their groundbreaking research on chronic kidney disease.
They have been actively working on their landmark kidney study- the Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort (CRIC) Study since 2001. This grant allows for further exploration into novel risk factors in the progression of CKD, cardiovascular disease and other related disease outcomes in patients with CKD.
CKD is a public health challenge that affects the general population as a major risk factor for end-stage renal disease, cardiovascular disease and premature death. This study helps develop effective approaches for early detection and methods to slow down the disease.
The NIH has awarded $14.6 million since the study began. This new phase of the CRIC Study will be conducted over the next five years and involves home monitoring of kidney and cardiovascular functions to characterize the study participants.
