Program Is First Heart Transplant One In State
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia University's Heart and Vascular Institute plans to start offering the first heart transplant program in the state.
WVU Medicine officials announced the plan Wednesday at a news conference also attended by Gov. Jim Justice. Justice said residents of the state deserve to have the procedure available in their home state.
The health care provider said residents usually have to go to Pittsburgh or Cleveland for heart transplants. There are 22 West Virginia residents on the waiting list for a heart transplant.
WVU Health System President and CEO Albert L. Wright Jr. said the institute is a state-of-the-art facility and recruited nationally and internationally recognized doctors and surgeons.
A letter of intent was filed with the West Virginia Health Care Authority on Aug. 10, and a certificate of need application was filed Aug. 20.
