World War II veteran Donates $2M For College Scholarships
Donation Seeks To Support Students Pursuing STEM Careers
BAYONNE, N.J. (AP) — A World War II veteran from New Jersey has donated $2 million for college scholarships supporting students from Bayonne High School.
The $2 million William Gawor Perpetual Scholarship Fund will provide college scholarships for students hoping to pursue a career in a STEM field, pending court approval. The Jersey Journal reports Gawor graduated from the school in 1937 and went on to a successful career in engineering before his death in 2016.
Interim Superintendent Michael Wanko says the district hopes to award money to the first recipient at the end of the school year. The fund will support students interested in pursuing a career in science, technology, engineering or math.
Gawor served in WWII from 1942 to 1946, achieving the rank of U.S. Army staff sergeant.
