Immigrants Held In US Prison Sue Over Harsh Conditions [Beyond Education]

Immigrants sued the U.S. government Wednesday over conditions at a federal prison in California used to house detainees since the Trump administration sought to toughen enforcement on the U.S.-Mexico border. The lawsuit filed in federal court in Riverside says harsh prison conditions at a medium-security facility in Victorville, California, are too restrictive for detainees awaiting their immigration court hearings, many who are seeking asylum.

Immigrant Families Remain Apart With No End In Sight [Beyond Education]

As the U.S. government said it had reunited every immigrant family it could, Josefina Ortiz Corrales remained in an immigration detention center and her adopted son in the care of her elder daughter. Paulina Gutierrez was in her hometown in Guatemala, earning less than $2 a day preparing strings for candle wicks while praying for the quick return of her 7-year-old daughter from government custody in Arizona.

Immigrant Held After Army Base Pizza Delivery Released [Beyond Education]

An Ecuadorean immigrant who was held for deportation after delivering pizza to a Brooklyn Army installation walked out of an immigration detention center house hours after a judge ordered his immediate release. Pablo Villavicencio exited the detention center shortly before 9 p.m. Tuesday. He was greeted with hugs from his jubilant wife and two young daughters.

Colleges Face Petitions, Protests To Split With ICE [Education News]

Some colleges are being pressured to cut ties with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement amid public outcries over the separation of migrant families along the nation's southern border. Northeastern University, Johns Hopkins University and Vermont's system of public colleges have contracts with ICE totaling about $4 million this year for research and training services.
