US Awards $589M To Puerto Rico's Education Department [Education News]

Puerto Rico's governor says the island's Department of Education will receive $589 million in federal funds to help defray costs related to Hurricane Maria. Gov. Ricardo Rossello said Monday that the money will be released under the federal Restart program. The funds come as Puerto Rico prepares to close 280 public schools amid an 11-year recession and a drop in enrollment.

US Starts Processing Asylum Seekers Slammed By Trump [Beyond Education]

U.S. border inspectors allowed some of the Central American asylum-seekers to enter the country for processing. But the migrants who crossed Mexico in a caravan may face a long legal path. Organizers said eight members of the group criticized by President Donald Trump that traveled from southern Mexico to the border city of Tijuana, but U.S. Customs and Border Protection did not provide a number.

About 170 migrants in a caravan of Central American asylum-seekers have arrived in Tijuana, joining about nearly 200 others on their final stop before entering the United States. Three tourist buses were guarded by a Mexican police escort on a curvy, mountainous road from the Mexican border city of Mexicali.

About 130 Central Americans, mostly women and children, have arrived at the U.S. border with Mexico in a "caravan" of asylum-seeking immigrants that has drawn the fury of President Donald Trump. Two busloads arrived late Tuesday in the Mexican border city of Tijuana at two migrant shelters just steps from one of the most fortified stretches of border separating the U.S. from Mexico.

The Connecticut House of Representatives has given final legislative approval to a bill that allows immigrant students without legal status to be eligible for institutional financial aid at state-run colleges and universities. The bill passed Wednesday on a 91-59 vote, following a daylong debate. It now awaits the governor's signature.

The U.S. government risks placing migrant children in the custody of human traffickers because federal agencies have delayed crucial reforms needed to keep the children safe, according to the findings of a Senate subcommittee obtained by The Associated Press. Federal officials came under fire two years ago for rolling back child welfare policies meant to protect unaccompanied minors fleeing violence in Central America.

Judge Deals Big Setback To Trump On 'DREAMers' Program [Beyond Education]

A federal judge ruled that the Trump administration must resume a program that has shielded hundreds of thousands of young immigrants from deportation but gave it 90 days to restate its arguments before his order takes effect. The ruling by U.S. District Judge John D. Bates in Washington, if it survives the 90-day reprieve, would be a new setback for the administration.

Remnants Of Mexico Migrant Caravan Closer To US Border [Beyond Education]

The remnants of a caravan of Central American migrants protested in northern Mexico on Monday, even as once again they drew angry tweets from U.S. President Donald Trump. The mainly Central American migrants are demanding better treatment and many are planning to request asylum, either in the United States or Mexico.

4-H And New York Life Foundation Inspire More Latino Youth To Pursue Higher Education [On A Positive Note In Education]

National 4-H Council recently received a three year, $1.5 million grant from the New York Life Foundation to enable more Latino students to successfully transition from middle school to high school, graduate on time and pursue a college education. The grant will provide continued support to the Juntos 4-H program launched in 2015 while expanding the program to new markets in California and Illinois.
