House Passes Immigrant Tuition Bill After Daylong Debate [Education News]

The Connecticut House of Representatives has given final legislative approval to a bill that allows immigrant students without legal status to be eligible for institutional financial aid at state-run colleges and universities. The bill passed Wednesday on a 91-59 vote, following a daylong debate. It now awaits the governor's signature.

The U.S. government risks placing migrant children in the custody of human traffickers because federal agencies have delayed crucial reforms needed to keep the children safe, according to the findings of a Senate subcommittee obtained by The Associated Press. Federal officials came under fire two years ago for rolling back child welfare policies meant to protect unaccompanied minors fleeing violence in Central America.

Judge Deals Big Setback To Trump On 'DREAMers' Program [Beyond Education]

A federal judge ruled that the Trump administration must resume a program that has shielded hundreds of thousands of young immigrants from deportation but gave it 90 days to restate its arguments before his order takes effect. The ruling by U.S. District Judge John D. Bates in Washington, if it survives the 90-day reprieve, would be a new setback for the administration.

Remnants Of Mexico Migrant Caravan Closer To US Border [Beyond Education]

The remnants of a caravan of Central American migrants protested in northern Mexico on Monday, even as once again they drew angry tweets from U.S. President Donald Trump. The mainly Central American migrants are demanding better treatment and many are planning to request asylum, either in the United States or Mexico.

4-H And New York Life Foundation Inspire More Latino Youth To Pursue Higher Education [On A Positive Note In Education]

National 4-H Council recently received a three year, $1.5 million grant from the New York Life Foundation to enable more Latino students to successfully transition from middle school to high school, graduate on time and pursue a college education. The grant will provide continued support to the Juntos 4-H program launched in 2015 while expanding the program to new markets in California and Illinois.

Improving Spanish-speaking Teachers

Texas Woman’s University Introduces a Bilingual Program A federal grant at Texas Woman’s University (TWU) is helping bilingual and in-service teachers become better educators by improving their bilingual skills.   The program, which launched in 2016, is called PIONERAS, the Spanish word for “pioneer.” In 2017, 24 graduate students and 42 undergraduates who are all bilingual and in-service teachers participated in it.
