Trump Calls For Border Legislation Using 'Nuclear Option' [Beyond Education]

President Donald Trump demanded Monday that Congress pass new border legislation using the "Nuclear Option if necessary" to change the Senate rules end the filibuster in order to muscle it through the Senate — a drastic change in rules the Republican leader has previously dismissed. He also said that a deal to help "Dreamer" immigrants is "dead."

Hispanic Superintendents In Texas Lags Student Population [Education News]

Hispanic superintendents are underrepresented in Texas public schools, despite Hispanic students representing the majority of students in the state. More than 52 percent of Texas students are Hispanic, compared with about 25 percent nationally. The Houston Chronicle reports that Martha Salazar-Zamora is the sole Hispanic superintendent among 55 school district leaders in the Greater Houston area, where 51 percent of students are Hispanic.

Puerto Rico's governor signed an education reform bill Thursday to create charter schools and vouchers and help turn around a department long known for its bureaucracy and struggles to administer dwindling resources. The bill aims to decentralize the Department of Education and ensure that 70 percent of its budget reaches schools.

Puerto Rico was hit by Hurricane Maria exactly six months ago, and the U.S. territory is still struggling to recover from the strongest storm to hit the island in nearly a century. Crews already have restored water to 99 percent of clients and power to 93 percent of customers, but more than 100,000 of them still remain in the dark and there are frequent power outages.

Virtually every college offers summer programs dedicated to help prepare incoming students succeed in college.  Many have been at it for decades, and their programs have proven to be successful for thousands.

Avoiding Academic Decay Through Well-Planned Summers by <b> Miquela Rivera </b>

The best summer vacations start in the winter – if you want a meaningful three-month break for Latino students once the school year ends.  Too many idle hours of summer vacation can result in academic decay – a loss of knowledge by students due to nonuse.  It’s intellectual atrophy – knowledge once acquired not actively used since becomes less meaningful or accessible. Too much unstructured time can also result in behavior problems like loss of motivation and self-control.  And for teens needing a summer job, winter is the time to start looking.

White House Opposes Short-Term 'Dreamer' Fix In New Talks [Beyond Education]

The White House said Wednesday it does not favor an immigration agreement with Congress that would involve extending protections for young immigrants for three years in exchange for three years of border wall funding. Deputy press secretary Raj Shah said the administration continues to negotiate an immigration overhaul that would address the DACA program while also stopping illegal immigration and modernizing the legal immigration system.
