Disney Offering Staff $1,000 Bonuses, New Education Funding

The Walt Disney Co. will give more than 125,000 eligible employees a one-time $1,000 cash bonus and invest $50 million in an education funding program. Nearly 88,000 hourly employees will be eligible for the education program which will cover tuition costs. Along with the initial $50 million investment, the Burbank, California company will provide up to $25 million annually for the program.

As chair of Latin American and Latino studies, Professor Patricia Zavella is charged with making things run smoothly in her department at the University of California-Santa Cruz (UCSC). But her job doesn’t end on the picturesque campus, nestled in the redwood forests and meadows overlooking Monterey Bay. Zavella spends much of her time in another part of the county – another world, really – the migrant labor neighborhoods in nearby Watsonville. For a decade, the acclaimed cultural anthropologist interviewed and observed migrant people for her forthcoming book, I’m Neither Here Nor There: Mexicans’ Quotidian Struggles with Migration and Poverty.

But there was nothing mundane about it for Ester Gimbernat González, a young, ambitious literature student from Argentina. Filled with anticipation, she stepped for the first time into the campus library, a vast place where every section was lined with books she wanted to read or catch up on. “When the doors opened, I was so happy, I couldn’t leave,” she said. “I was in heaven.”

In the scene where Janet Leigh’s character is driving along a stark high-way in California’s Central Valley, a sign appears bearing the name of Gorman, Calif., a small town located near Muñoz’s hometown, Dinuba.

Yeidy Rivero was where she liked to be best on a recent weekday night –sitting in her Ann Arbor home, watching TV for several hours. But it wasn’t to unwind. Watching television is Rivero’s profession. As associate professor in the University of Michigan’s Department of Screen Arts and Cultures, and the Program of American Culture, she studies the medium and its relationship with culture and race, with a special emphasis on subjects of interest to Hispanics.

Christmas Comes for Thousands of Poor Children on Skid Row--On a Positive Note (Beyond Education)

Fred Jordan Missions brought Christmas to thousands of impoverished inner city children who received toys at Los Angeles' largest Christmas Toy Party on Saturday, December 16. The party also included a Christmas show featuring Mickey and Minnie Mouse singing Christmas Carols, courtesy of The Walt Disney Company. Friends of Disney greeted the children and escorted them to the Toy Giveaway tables where each child received multiple toys, as well as blankets, hats, mittens and socks. In addition, each mother received a Christmas dinner food bag filled with fresh turkeys or chickens, fresh vegetables and fruit, and enough food to feed their family a special Christmas dinner.
