Higher Education Institution in Springfield to Open Its 1st Student Union; Ribbon Cutting at $21.75M Building Sunday

The University of Illinois Springfield is opening its first student union. A ribbon cutting is scheduled Sunday at the $21.75 million building, which includes a coffee shop, ballroom and student leadership center. The 50,000-square-foot (4,645-square-meter) student center will be a social hub for students on the growing campus.

Coppin State U Senior Starts GoFundMe Campaign Raising More Than $26K for Students in Need [On a Positive Note in Education]

After some Baltimore public school students had to wear their coats and hats in cold classrooms amid severe winter weather, Coppin State University senior Samierra Jones started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for space heaters, hats, coats and gloves. By Thursday afternoon, the fundraiser had collected more than $26,000.

West Virginia Higher Education Institutions Group to Promote Job Creation [Job News]

Marshall University says in a news release that presidents and representatives of the 10 schools (Bluefield State College; BridgeValley, Mountwest, New River and Southern West Virginia community and technical colleges; Concord University; the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine; West Virginia State University, and West Virginia University Tech) will introduce the Alliance for Economic Development for Southern West Virginia at the state Capitol.

Record Number Earn Bachelor's Degrees from Virginia Higher Education Institutions

Research released Friday by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia shows that students earned a total of 54,508 bachelor's degrees in the 2016-2017 school year, with the majority — at nearly 38,000— conferred by the state's public colleges. More than 31,000 of the degrees were obtained by in-state students.

The former Dana College campus in Blair will be renamed for the couple donating it to an organization planning to offer housing and programs to low-income elderly, young people aging out of foster care and others. The campus has been closed since 2010 after an accreditation body refused to approve the college's sale to for-profit investors.

Minnesota Higher Education Institution Opens Brand New Campus to Students

Rasmussen College, a regionally accredited private college, announced the opening of its brand new Mankato campus. The single-story facility includes large, high-tech classrooms, new computer labs and simulation equipment, updated health sciences and nursing labs as well as expanded student learning and faculty spaces. The new Mankato campus is now open to students with classes beginning this week.
