Places where the National Weather Service has issued blizzard warnings include the Delmarva Peninsula, which includes parts of Delaware, Virginia and Maryland; coastal New Jersey; eastern Long Island, New York; and coastal eastern New England.

Colorado Authorities Were Warned about Gunman's Mental State [Beyond Education]

Colorado authorities were contacted with concerns about the mental health of Matthew Riehl over a month before he shot and killed a deputy and wounded four others. But the 37-year-old man was never held for a mental health evaluation. Authorities say Riehl fired more than 100 rounds in his suburban Denver apartment before he was killed by a SWAT team on Sunday.

President Donald Trump signed the $1.5 trillion tax overhaul into law Friday, using his last moments in the White House before flying to Florida for the holidays to celebrate a much-needed political win. He also signed a temporary spending bill to keep the government running and provide money to upgrade the nation's missile defenses. The tax cut, which fulfilled a long-held Republican goal, was at the forefront of Trump's mind.

Scam Spoofs Higher Education Institution’s Phone Number to Target Students

Campus police at a North Carolina university say a phone scam is spoofing the university's number to obtain money from students. The News & Observer reports that North Carolina State University police said on social media accounts Tuesday that individuals have spoofed the main university phone number to show up as the caller's number. Maj. Ian Kendrick says the callers have told students there's a problem with their status at the university and a fee is required to fix the problem.

Senate Moves Tax Cut Legislation to Brink of Final Passage -- Beyond Education

Jubilant Republicans pushed on early Wednesday to the verge of the most sweeping rewrite of the nation's tax laws in more than three decades, a deeply unpopular bill they insist Americans will learn to love when they see their paychecks in the new year. President Donald Trump cheered the lawmakers on, eager to claim his first major legislative victory. After midnight, the Senate narrowly passed the legislation on a party-line 51-48 vote. Protesters interrupted with chants of "kill the bill, don't kill us" and Vice President Mike Pence repeatedly called for order. Upon passage, Republicans cheered, with Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin among them.

Holiday Travel Chaos Ahead after Atlanta Airport Outage--Beyond Education

Ticketing and baggage areas were a bit backed up, but security lines were moving quickly in Atlanta on Monday morning as the world's busiest airport recovered from a crippling power outage. Thousands of people remained stranded a day after the outage at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, where more than 1,000 flights were grounded just days before the start of the Christmas travel rush. A sudden power outage that Georgia Power said was caused by a fire in an underground electrical facility brought the airport to a standstill Sunday around 1 p.m.
