Supreme Court Considering Case On Detention Of Immigrants

A case involving immigration is before the Supreme Court. The case involves long-term green card holders who are eligible to be deported because they have been convicted of a broad range of crimes. Current immigration law says noncitizens who are convicted of certain crimes should be detained when they are released from state custody or federal custody.

The University of Washington College Republicans have threated legal action against Shultzy’s Bar and Grill when the sports-themed establishment asked them to go elsewhere for their “Beers 4 Brett” event to celebrate the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

Brett Kavanaugh Will Not Return To Teach At Harvard Law

Administrators at Harvard announced by email that Judge Brett Kavanaugh will not be returning to teach at Harvard Law School in January. Kavanaugh was scheduled to teach a course entitled The Supreme Court Since 2005, which is a three-week course that he has taught at Harvard Law School for about a decade.

To celebrate the release of her two children’s books, Justice Sonia Sotomayor spoke to children and parents at the Newark Public Library in New Jersey. Her books are entitled "The Beloved World of Sonia Sotomayor!" and "Turning Pages: My Life Story.”

Lawsuit Claims Houston Blocking Facility For Migrant Kids

The city of Houston is being sued by the nonprofit Southwest Key Programs. The nonprofit alleges city officials are obstructing efforts to open a facility to house unaccompanied migrant children. Southwest Key Programs also alleges that the city incorrectly designated the shelter as a detention facility as opposed to a residential facility.

Democratic AGs Win Case Against US Education Secretary DeVos

The District of Columbia and Democratic attorneys general from 19 states won a case against U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos. The lawsuit against DeVos was regarding her decision to suspend rules that are meant to protect students from abuse specifically by for-profit colleges.

Trump's Former Lawyer Pleads Guilty, Implicates President

President Donald Trump’s onetime campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, and the president’s former attorney, Michael Cohen, both found themselves in legal jeopardy yesterday, and Trump may be next. Manafort was convicted of financial crimes on Monday. Cohen has pled guilty to campaign finance violations and has implicated Trump in a campaign cover-up.

California School Boards Sue Over Education Funding Law

A lawsuit has called into question the future of public school funding in California. The California School Boards Association filed a lawsuit on Friday over a provision in the state budget. The suit argues that a budget trailer bill enacted this year could allow lawmakers to improperly manipulate the formula used for calculating school funding.

US Judge Halts Deportation, Threatens Sessions With Contempt

A federal judge on Thursday halted a deportation in progress and threatened to hold Attorney General Jeff Sessions in contempt if the mother and daughter weren't returned to the U.S. U.S. District Judge Emmet G. Sullivan of Washington learned in court that the two plaintiffs in a lawsuit before him were being removed from the United States.
