The first Latina astronaut was Ellen Ochoa, a Stanford graduate and inventor for NASA.  Joaquin and Julian Castro, brothers from San Antonio, served as U.S. Representative and U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, respectively. Sonia Sotomayor is the first Latina Supreme Court Justice.  Gloria and Emilio Estefan from the famed Miami Sound Machine have sold 100 million records and now own their own recording studio. She received the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom for her contributions to American music.

University Study Finds Science Achievement Gaps Start Early – In Kindergarten

On average, black students and Hispanic students performed significantly lower than white students on the science achievement tests in kindergarten. Approximately 41 percent of black students and 49 percent of Hispanic students scored in the bottom 25 percent. In comparison, only 12 percent of white students were in this category.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo is expanding the highly successful New York stands with Puerto Rico Recovery and Rebuilding Initiative. They will be deploying 500 more SUNY and CUNY student volunteers and launching a new disaster mental health initiative. In closed door meetings U.S. Treasury Department officials have distributed a list of companies that are suspected to be shell companies that they believe senior Venezuelan officials have used to siphon off millions of dollars from food import contracts.

University Of Florida Leads In Professor Raises

University of Florida is leading the state when it comes to raises for its professors, according to a new study by the American Association of University Professors. Full-time professors at the University’s Gainesville location got on average an 8.8 percent salary increase in 2017-18.
