Hispanic Serving Institutions May 2018 Issue

According to the U.S. Department of Education, “a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) is defined as an institution of higher education that—(A) is an eligible institution; and (B) has an enrollment of undergraduate full-time equivalent students that is at least 25 percent Hispanic students at the end of the award year immediately preceding the date of application.” While this definition nicely sums up the requirements a school must meet to become an HSI, being an HSI and truly serving the Hispanic community goes beyond statistics. And so we here at Hispanic Outlook are running an ongoing article series highlighting those schools that have achieved HSI status and how they are truly Hispanic-Serving Institutions.

School Library May 2018 Issue

Born in Kingsville, Texas, Carmen Lomas Garza has found great inspiration in her family. It was in large part because of her parents’ activism with the American G.I. Forum that Garza joined the Chicano Movement of the 1960s and 1970s. As an artist and author, her books reflect her life growing up and her culture and heritage. And so we at Hispanic Outlook are pleased to feature Garza’s works for this month’s school library. Book summaries, teacher’s guides, book discussion and activity guide, and sample book pages are all courtesy of Lee & Low Books. In addition, supplemental materials for “MAGIC WINDOWS/VENTANAS MÁGICAS” were created by Lindsay Harris and Haley Rugger with Dr. Jamie Campbell Naidoo, as well as provided by the University of Alabama School of Library and Informational Studies.

School Victims Honored At Billboard Awards [Education News]

The 2018 Billboard Music Awards paid tribute to the students and teachers affected by recent deadly shootings in Texas and Florida, while the night also featured show-stopping performances by iconic singer Janet Jackson and K-pop group BTS. A tearful and emotional Kelly Clarkson, who hosted the awards, opened the show in honor of the 10 people who died Friday at Santa Fe High School.

Kansas Colleges Seek Tuition Hikes Even After Funding Boost [Education News]

State universities in Kansas are asking for permission to increase tuition again this fall even after legislators boosted their overall state funding to levels not seen for a decade. The six state universities and the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City have submitted proposals to the state Board of Regents to increase tuition and required fees for undergraduate students from 1.2 percent to 3 percent.

International Outcry Grows Over Disputed Venezuela Vote [Beyond Education]

A growing roster of nations condemned Venezuela's presidential election Monday and threatened to ramp up diplomatic and economic pressure on President Nicolas Maduro's already embattled government. A coalition of 14 nations from throughout the Americas, including Brazil, Mexico and Colombia, pledged to scale back diplomatic relations with Venezuela and urge international organizations not to issue Venezuela any new credit.

Trump 'demands' Doj Investigate FBI

President Donald Trump "demands" that the Department of Justice investigate the FBI. Maduro, the socialist incumbent, has won the presidential election in Venezuela. A mother in Texas, who had been inspired by survivors of the school shooting that happened in Florida, faced the same extreme gun violence that she marched against.

Cuban Media: Boeing 737 Crashes With 113 People Aboard [Breaking News Beyond Education]

A Cuban airliner with 113 people on board plummeted into a yuca field just after takeoff from Havana's international airport on Friday. There was no immediate word on casualties, though residents told The Associated Press they saw at least some survivors being taken away in ambulances.

The Army Corps of Engineers is ending its work to rebuild Puerto Rico's electric grid, despite residents' fears that the island's government won't be able to restore power on its own to more than 16,000 people who remain blacked out eight months after Hurricane Maria.

Reliant Home Run Derby With Dallas Cowboys Raises $50,000 For The Salvation Army [On A Positive Note In Education And Beyond]

Fans filled Dr Pepper Ballpark to cheer on 10 of their favorite Dallas Cowboys as they stepped up to the plate in the seventh annual Reliant Home Run Derby. The Cowboys’ bats came alive and the team raised a total of $50,000 for the Gene and Jerry Jones North Texas Youth Education Town of The Salvation Army Arlington.

U Of Illinois Board Approves $263M In Construction Projects [Education News]

The University of Illinois is moving forward with more than $263 million in construction projects at its campuses in Urbana-Champaign and Chicago. The Board of Trustees voted Thursday to approve funding for 10 projects, including new or renovated residential, research and classroom buildings.
