Hispanic-serving Institutions March 2018

According to the U.S. Department of Education, “a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) is defined as an institution of higher education that—(A) is an eligible institution; and (B) has an enrollment of undergraduate full-time equivalent students that is at least 25 percent Hispanic students at the end of the award year immediately preceding the date of application.” While this definition nicely sums up the requirements a school must meet to become an HSI, being an HSI and truly serving the Hispanic community goes beyond statistics. And so we here at Hispanic Outlook are running an ongoing article series highlighting those schools that have achieved HSI status and how they are truly Hispanic-Serving Institutions.

UW Looks For $15M To Fill Science Building Funding Gap [Education News]

University of Wyoming officials will have to find an additional $15 million to build a new facility they hope will make the school a top research institution after lawmakers approved just $85 million for the project. UW president Laurie Nichols said school officials were pleased with the funding that resulted from a compromise by state lawmakers.

Russian president Valdimir Putin's election victory has given him a mandate to pursue his nationalist, assertive policies for another six years. An explosion in Austin, Texas, injures two people.

The MusicHelpsHeal.org program, which was started to help the students displaced from Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands due to hurricane Maria, is using music to address the emotional and social needs caused by the storm. Many local businesses and organizations have donated instruments, and some have provided cash and grant opportunities.

Fallen Bridge: 'Stress Test' Preceded Collapse That Killed 6 [Education News]

An innovative pedestrian bridge being built at Florida International University had been put to a "stress test" and its cables were being tightened when it collapsed over traffic, killing six people and sending 10 to a hospital, authorities said. Two workers were on the 950-ton bridge when it pancaked on top of vehicles waiting at a stoplight.

Pedestrian Bridge Collapses At University; Several Hurt [Education News]

A newly-installed pedestrian bridge collapsed Thursday at Florida International University, trapping at least five vehicles underneath. Live television reports showed several people loaded onto ambulances immediately after the collapse. There was no immediate report of injuries or any fatalities from authorities. The 950-ton span was installed on Saturday.
