Programing Glitch Puts 3,000 Scholarship Winners' Data Including Social Security Numbers Online [Education News]

A state agency is telling 3,000 college scholarship recipients in South Carolina that their personal information was posted online for 10 months. The Commission on Higher Education sent a letter to students who earned Palmetto Fellows scholarships, saying their names, addresses and Social Security numbers were posted in May 2017 when the agency switched programs.

Protests To Await Trump's Visit To California Border [Beyond Education]

Rallies for and against Donald Trump's "big beautiful border wall" with Mexico are expected to mark his first visit to California as president amid growing tensions between his administration and the state over immigration enforcement. Trump will visit eight towering prototypes of his planned wall Tuesday before addressing Marines in San Diego and attending a fund-raiser in Los Angeles.

Immigrants Sue US Over End To Temporary Protected Status [Beyond Education]

The Trump administration's decision to end a program that lets immigrants from four countries live and work legally in the U.S. was motivated by racism and leaves the immigrants' American born children with an "impossible choice," according to a federal lawsuit filed on Monday. Nine immigrants and five children filed the suit to reinstate temporary protected status for people from El Salvador, Haiti, Nicaragua and Sudan.

1968 LA School Walkout Protesters See Link To Parkland Teens

Participants in a 1968 Los Angeles high school walkout to protest dropout rates and paddle beatings for speaking Spanish that ended up prompting a wave of Mexican-American youth activism say they hear echoes of their demonstrations in the voices of outraged students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, where 17 people died in a mass shooting.

Pilot In NYC Crash Called 'Mayday,' Cited Engine Failure [Beyond Education]

A pilot whose helicopter went down in Manhattan's East River, killing five passengers, says in an emergency radio transmission that he had engine failure. The pilot is heard saying "Mayday, mayday, mayday" during the crash on Sunday night. The person at the other end of the transmission had trouble making out what the pilot was saying.

Trump Doesn't Set Age For Guns, Defers On Arming Teachers [Educations News]

President Donald Trump's plan to prevent school shootings doesn't increase the minimum age for purchasing assault weapons to 21 and leaves the question of arming teachers to states and local communities. Instead, a new federal commission on school safety will examine the age issue as part of a package in response to the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, last month that left 17 dead.

President Donald Trump backs off pushing to raise the assault rifle purchase age, and his administration has pledged to help states pay for training teachers on how to use firearms. The same helicopter that plunged into the East River was involved in a fatal crash in 2009. A plane crash in Nepal kills dozens. Despite the president's rhetoric, little has changed on the U.S.-Mexico border.

Skechers Foundation Gives More Than $1.5 Million To Children With Special Needs And Education [On A Positive Note]

The Skechers Foundation celebrated its ninth record-breaking Skechers Pier to Pier Friendship Walk for children presenting more than $510,000 to The Friendship Foundation in support of kids with special needs, and over $1 million for education foundations. The organization also announced the continuation of its annual Skechers Foundation Scholarship Program, and will award $100,000 in college scholarships for the 2018-2019 school year.
