Hispanic Community October 2024 Riverland Community College: A Beacon of Opportunity and Growth in Southeastern Minnesota Riverland Community College, founded in 1996, plays a vital role in southeastern Minnesota’s workforce development and education. Language is a cultural expression that reflects a way of feeling, thinking, living, and conceiving the world. For this reason, a single language can display as many variations as the settings in which it is used, geographical, social, and contextual—such as formal or informal registers, age, or education level. Because of this complexity, it is challenging to universalize concepts on the use of language.

Global September 2016 Cooke Foundation Recommends Actions Top Colleges Should Take to Increase Enrollment of Low-Income Students The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation has released an issue brief recommending actions that top colleges and universities should take to increase campus diversity by enrolling greater numbers of academically qualified low-income students. The issue brief comes a day after a U.S. Supreme decision rejecting a challenge to race-conscious affirmative action admissions in the case of Fisher v. the University of Texas at Austin.
Global September 2016 PREMIUM Hispanic-Serving State Colleges and Universities Aim to Boost Political, Civic Engagement The “Walk 2 Vote” event is just a part of the school’s nonpartisan efforts to increase political engagement, giving the UHD a 50 percent student voter rate in 2012. It’s a notable achievement on an overwhelmingly racially diverse and non-traditional student campus; 71 percent of registered students voted in that election.
Hispanic Community September 2016 PREMIUM HACU Honors Excellence In Higher Education The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) established the HACU Hall of Champions to honor those who embody the mission of the Association through exemplary efforts “To Champion Hispanic Success in Higher Education.” They began this practice in 2011 with the induction of Antonio Rigual and have continued every year including in 2015 with the induction of Cruz Reynoso. The exhibit offers an immersive experience that allows visitors to explore the ways big data and social media have transformed how candidates campaign, how journalists cover elections and how the public participates in the political process.
Arts and Media August 2016 PREMIUM MARIACHI USA Goes To Cuba Iconic Music Festival Unites Three Cultures This Fall MARIACHI USA, the premier mariachi music festival in the U.S., is headed to Cuba for a historic performance this fall. Mariachi musicians, singers and dancers will converge in La Habana on October 4-11, 2016 as part of a seven-day, six-night tour offered by Cuba Tours and Travel, announced Rodri J. Rodriguez, MARIACHI USA founder and longtime concert producer. The show’s company of 25 artists will perform on Sunday, October 9 at Teatro América, a historic theater built in the 1940s that has hosted international top talent over the years.
