Hispanic Community October 2024 Riverland Community College: A Beacon of Opportunity and Growth in Southeastern Minnesota Riverland Community College, founded in 1996, plays a vital role in southeastern Minnesota’s workforce development and education. Global September 2018 US Marks 9/11 With Somber Tributes The United States is marking the anniversary of 9/11 with volunteer projects and somber tributes. In addition, a new monument called the “Tower of Voices” was dedicated on Saturday in honor of the victims. The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 caused the deaths of nearly 3,000 people.
Hispanic Community September 2018 Cal State LA Celebrates 50th Anniversary Of Chicano Studies Program California State University Los Angeles (Cal State LA) established the first Chicano studies program in the nation 50 years ago. Back then, around four percent of students were Mexican American, and the program only had four courses. Valuing the history, culture and contributions of Mexican Americans, the program now offers over 150 courses.
Global September 2018 Fairmont State U, Foundation In Fight Against Student Hunger A partnership between Fairmont State University, Aladdin Food Services and the Wesley Foundation is providing students on campus with three or four hot lunches weekly. The Foundation is located across the street from the University and has provided food to hungry students for years.
Hispanic Community September 2018 Immigrant Families Struggling With Trauma Of Separation Parents and children who were separated at the U.S.-Mexico border and have since been reunited are dealing with emotional trauma because of the experience. A federal class-action lawsuit has been filed, seeking financial compensation and the creation of a fund to pay for mental health treatment for the children.
Global September 2018 Bilingual Certificates Proposed For Oklahoma Diplomas Oklahoma high school graduates who are fluent in more than one language may have a special seal added to their transcripts or diplomas. The Oklahoma Association for Bilingual Education is proposing that the state add this Seal of Biliteracy for students who can speak English and at one other language proficiently.
