2016 Olympics: CSUF Scholar Calls for More Gender Equity

With the U.S. women’s soccer and field hockey teams qualifying for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, expectations are that more female than male athletes will compete on this year’s U.S. Olympic team. At the 2012 London Olympics, the U.S. Olympic team consisted of 270 women and 262 men. That year, female athletes accounted for 44.3 percent of all Olympians.

Duke School of Medicine Dean Nancy Andrews to Step Down In 2017

Dr. Nancy C. Andrews, MD, Ph.D., dean of the Duke University School of Medicine and vice chancellor for academic affairs at Duke, announced today that she will step down from both roles at the end of her 10th year, in June 2017. A committee will be formed immediately to begin a national search for a new dean.

High School Business Competition Plans Statewide Event; Baker College to Sponsor

An effort that invites Michigan high school students to develop solutions to real-world business problems is expanding with a statewide competition. IChallengeU previously offered regional contests, including recent events in Jackson and Holland. Baker College is sponsoring the statewide competition. Regional winners in 2017 will be eligible for the state contest.

Ohio Schools, Hospitals Get $4.8 Million in Training Grants

Eighteen universities, medical schools and hospitals in Ohio have been awarded almost $4.8 million in federal funds as part of an effort to boost access to primary care. The workforce grants were recently announced by the federal Health Resources and Services Administration. Agency officials say the money will help fund education and training programs for providers who will practice in underserved areas.

New York College’s Summer Camp Students Dig Up Ancient Artifact

Officials at the State University of New York at Geneseo say fifth through 11th graders from Rochester public schools were excavating an area on campus when they found the base of a projectile point that's believed to be 3,000 to 6,000 years old. The students are part of the Rochester Young Scholars Academy at Geneseo summer camp.

$2.1 Million IGEM Grant to Make UI a Leader in Cyber Physical Control Systems Security

University of Idaho researchers have received a $2.1 million grant from the Idaho State Board of Education, Higher Education Research Council’s Idaho Global Entrepreneurial Mission (IGEM) will fund a three year proposal titled Security Management of Cyber Physical Control Systems (CPCS). State-based industry will play a key role in aiding the team’s incubation and development of innovative products and services for safeguarding cyber physical control systems.

AAA Member Carlos Velez-Ibanez Named Corresponding Member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences

The Academia Mexicana de Ciencias (AMC) is part of a network of international learned societies including, among others, the American National Academy of Sciences. The Corresponding Member title recognizes the career and work of foreign researchers who, in addition to having excelled in their field of work, have contributed significantly to the development of Mexican science.

Cal State LA Alumnus Jaime Escalante Honored with U.S. Postal Service Stamp

The U.S. Postal Service has honored distinguished Cal State LA alumnus Jaime Escalante with a Forever Stamp. Escalante, who taught calculus at Garfield High School and inspired students for 17 years, was immortalized in the critically acclaimed 1998 film Stand and Deliver. Escalante passed away in 2010 after battling cancer. He was 79.

Florida Project Breeds 'Finding Dory' Fish in Captivity at the University of Florida

Researchers at the University of Florida say fish like the animated character Dory may become easier to find for home aquariums. In a statement Tuesday, researchers at the University of Florida Tropical Aquaculture Laboratory said they had successfully bred Pacific blue tangs in captivity for the first time.

Business deans at IU East, South Bend join Columbus executive on IU economic development council

Three new representatives will join Indiana University’s Council for Regional Engagement and Economic Development, or CREED, when its next meeting convenes Aug. 24 on the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis campus. Established in 2010 by IU’s Office of the Vice President for Engagement, CREED serves as a university-wide forum to address regional economic development issues.

Centenary College of Louisiana welcomes new president to campus

Centenary College faculty, staff, and students welcomed the institution’s 31st president, Dr. Christopher L. Holoman, to campus this morning at a reception in Hamilton Hall. Holoman comes to Centenary from Hilbert College in Hamburg, New York, where he had served as Provost since 2007.

U of L Awarded Grant for Alcohol Research Center

The University of Louisville says researchers at the school have received a nearly $8 million grant from the National Institutes of Health for an alcohol research center. The center at U of L will be one of 20 in the country designated as a National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism Alcohol Research Center. It will be the only such facility to focus its research on nutrition.

Inaugural Recipient of Student Award Embraces Global Engagement

In order to spend a year in Florence as part of the CSU International Program, Cal State Fullerton art major Claudia Itzel Márquez held bake sales, raffles and yard sales. She received donations from friends. She sold jewelry that she and her partner made by hand. And she received four scholarships that helped pay for her housing expenses.
