Seton Hall University and Hackensack Meridian Health Sign Agreement to Lease Former Roche Site for New School of Medicine

Seton Hall University and Hackensack Meridian Health announced today that the two organizations have signed an agreement for a long-term lease with the real estate development firm Prism Capital Partners to lease 16 acres including two state-of-the-art buildings on the former Hoffmann-La Roche biomedical campus located in Nutley and Clifton, New Jersey, to serve as the home for their new health and medical sciences campus.

17 Universities Oppose Anti-smoking Group with Tobacco Ties

Seventeen public health schools in the U.S. and Canada pledged Thursday to refuse research money from a new anti-smoking group funded by the tobacco industry. The Foundation for a Smoke-Free World was created in September with nearly $1 billion from the Philip Morris tobacco company, saying it aims to end smoking worldwide and support research to meet that goal.

Marshall Designated Purple Heart University [Education News]

Marshall University has been designated a Purple Heart University by the Military Order of the Purple Heart. Marshall said in a news release that it's the first university in West Virginia to be given the designation, which is meant to recognize the school's service to Purple Heart veterans in the areas.

SD Official: Universities Shouldn't Be Immigration Police [Education News]

A top South Dakota Board of Regents official says universities shouldn't play the role of immigration police after a lawmaker proposed banning people who are living in the U.S. illegally from enrolling at the state's public colleges. Mike Rush, the regents' executive director and CEO, says the board doesn't believe it's an issue at South Dakota public universities.

Sanford Donates $30 Million for Higher Education Scholarships

Billionaire philanthropist Denny Sanford is donating $30 million to create college scholarships for students who have faced tough hurdles in their path to becoming successful learners, including those in South Dakota. The money will start an endowment fund with the Horatio Alger Association. The organization provides scholarships to four-year universities across the country. Sanford picked seven South Dakota universities that winners can attend.
