Ever since she learned how expensive formal dresses could be during her eighth grade graduation, Christina and her mother began collecting dresses to lend out to local students who had trouble affording them.

US Awards $589M To Puerto Rico's Education Department [Education News]

Puerto Rico's governor says the island's Department of Education will receive $589 million in federal funds to help defray costs related to Hurricane Maria. Gov. Ricardo Rossello said Monday that the money will be released under the federal Restart program. The funds come as Puerto Rico prepares to close 280 public schools amid an 11-year recession and a drop in enrollment.

Facebook plans to partner with Central New Mexico Community College to establish a certificate program in digital marketing, the social media giant announced Monday. Marne Levine — chief operating officer for Instagram, a social media platform owned by Facebook — told people gathered for a small-business training event in Albuquerque that the certificate program will help participants add marketable skills to their resume.

El Paso Community College’s (EPCC) Clint Early College Academy was selected to a new partnership with Microsoft’s Technology, Education, and Literacy in Schools (TEALS) program, which helps high schools build and grow sustainable computer science programs through partnerships between classroom teachers and technology industry volunteers. The program will launch this fall at Clint ISD Early College Academy.

High School Seniors And College Students Are Invited To Apply To Win $5,000 Scholarship [Education News]

Liaison Technologies is now accepting applications for the Liaison Data-Inspired Future Scholarship for the 2018 fall semester. The scholarship is for students interested in pursuing careers in helping to drive innovation and solve challenges in business and society through data. Eligible high school and college students are invited to submit a video and résumé for consideration by May 31; the fall scholarship recipient will be announced June 30.

Transport Plane That Crashed In Georgia Was On Final Trip [Beyond Education]

An aging C-130 Hercules that rescued and resupplied U.S. citizens after last year's hurricanes crashed onto a highway in Georgia during what was supposed to be its final flight, killing all nine Puerto Ricans on board. The huge plane was being flown into retirement in Arizona, reducing Puerto Rico's National Guard fleet to five similar planes, two of which need maintenance and aren't being used.

Hawaii Volcano Sends Lava Bubbling, Forces 1,500 From Homes [Beyond Education]

Nearly 1,500 residents were ordered to evacuate from their volcano-side homes after Hawaii's Kilauea Volcano erupted, sending molten lava to chew its way through forest land and bubble up on paved streets. Volcano officials couldn't predict how long Thursday's eruption may last, prompting Hawaii's governor to activate the National Guard to help with evacuations and provide security to about 770 structures left empty when residents sought shelter.

Arizona Schools Reopen After Education Funding Deal Reached [Education News]

Hundreds of thousands of Arizona schoolchildren can go back to class now that the Legislature passed an education funding deal, ending a six-day walkout that shuttered classrooms around the state. Strike organizers called for an end to the walkout Thursday after a dramatic all-night legislative session resulted in a 20 percent pay raise by 2020.
