NY Sends 3rd Set Of Volunteers To Aid Puerto Rico Rebuilding [On A Positive Note In Education]

A third set of 100 New York college students and construction workers is headed to Puerto Rico to help rebuilding after Hurricane Maria's heavy blow to the island last year. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the volunteer deployment Sunday. It's the third since the start of June.

Judge Temporarily Halts Deportation Of Reunified Families [Beyond Education]

A federal judge on Monday ordered a temporary halt to any deportations of reunited families who were separated by the Trump administration after crossing the southwest border. The American Civil Liberties Union had asked Judge Dana Sabraw to delay deportations a week after reunification.

6 States And NYC Sue US Over Immigration-Related Policy [Beyond Education]

Six states and New York City sued the federal government Wednesday, joining other cities and states who say the government is trying to unlawfully force "sanctuary" communities to engage in federal immigration enforcement if they want anti-crime funds. Lawsuits were filed in Manhattan federal court on behalf of New York state and city, Connecticut, New Jersey, Washington, Massachusetts and Virginia.

NY Library Cardholders Get Free Admission To 33 Cultural Institutions [Beyond Education]

If you have a New York Library Card, you can now get into 33 cultural institutions for free. People who have library cards in the New York Public Library, the Brooklyn Public Library or the Queens Library will get to reserve a pass to the venues for free once a year. Some places will allow reservations for up to four people.

The Trump administration said Thursday that it has reunified 364 children ages 5 and older with their families after they were separated at the border, still leaving hundreds to go before a court-imposed deadline a week away. The Justice Department reaffirmed in a court filing that it has identified 2,551 children who may be covered by U.S. District Judge Dana Sabraw's order.

New Scholarship At UofL Aimed At First-Generation Students [Education News]

The University of Louisville will begin offering a new scholarship aimed at first-generation college students this fall. The school says in a statement that an endowment gift of $2.5 million from Carl F. Pollard will support two scholarships annually beginning in the 2018-19 school year. Pollard is a former Humana executive and Churchill Downs chairman.

Nearly 1,200 children 5 and older have been reunited with their families after being separated at the U.S.-Mexico border, leaving hundreds to go before this week's court-imposed deadline, according to a Justice Department court filing on Monday that raised the possibility that many parents have been deported.

Judge Strikes Down Florida's Campus Ban On Early Voting [Education News]

Calling it a "lopsided" burden on college students, a federal judge on Tuesday told Florida that college and university campuses can be used as early voting sites in this year's elections. In a scathing ruling, U.S. District Judge Mark Walker called the ban put in place by Secretary of State Ken Detzner unconstitutional. He said it appeared to be done to stop younger voters from casting ballots.

Immigrant Held After Army Base Pizza Delivery Released [Beyond Education]

An Ecuadorean immigrant who was held for deportation after delivering pizza to a Brooklyn Army installation walked out of an immigration detention center house hours after a judge ordered his immediate release. Pablo Villavicencio exited the detention center shortly before 9 p.m. Tuesday. He was greeted with hugs from his jubilant wife and two young daughters.
