Excavator Blamed For Island-Wide Blackout In Puerto Rico [Beyond Education]

An island-wide blackout hit Puerto Rico on Wednesday as the U.S. territory struggles to repair an increasingly unstable power grid nearly seven months after Hurricane Maria. Officials said an excavator accidentally downed a transmission line. Officials said it could take 24 to 36 hours to fully restore power to more than 1.4 million customers as outrage grew across the island about the state of Puerto Rico's Electric Power Authority.

The Latest: Cuba's New President Vows Socialist Continuity [Beyond Education]

President Mario Diaz-Canel has made his first speech as Cuba's new head of state with a pledge to continue the socialist revolution led by his predecessors Fidel and Raul Castro. Diaz-Canel says in the nationally televised speech before the National Assembly that his first thoughts upon taking office are for the "historic generation" that has led the country since the triumph of the Cuban Revolution in 1959.

California Reaches Deal On National Guard Border Mission [Beyond Education]

California has reached an agreement with the federal government that the state's National Guard troops will deploy to the border to focus on fighting transnational gangs as well as drug and gun smugglers, Gov. Jerry Brown said. The announcement Wednesday came after a week of uncertainty in which President Donald Trump bashed the governor's insistence that troops avoid immigration-related work.

3 Nebraska Colleges To Hike Tuition, Room Rates [Education News]

Students can expect higher residence hall room rates and increased tuition at three Nebraska colleges. Mandatory fees, tuition and room and board rates will likely rise at Chadron, Peru and Wayne State Colleges in the fall. Chadron State and Wayne State are expected to raise mandatory fees by nearly $8 per semester for full-time students. Peru State's fees will increase by nearly $38 per semester for full-time students.

Royal Baby: It's A Boy For Kate On England's National Day [Beyond Education]

The Duchess of Cambridge gave birth Monday to a healthy baby boy — a third child for Kate and Prince William and fifth in line to the British throne. The couple's Kensington Palace office announced news of the birth around lunchtime, about five hours after the 36-year-old duchess and her husband traveled by car from their Kensington Palace home to the private Lindo Wing of St. Mary's Hospital.

The Supreme Court will be weighing in on the Trump administration's travel ban.

4-H And New York Life Foundation Inspire More Latino Youth To Pursue Higher Education [On A Positive Note In Education]

National 4-H Council recently received a three year, $1.5 million grant from the New York Life Foundation to enable more Latino students to successfully transition from middle school to high school, graduate on time and pursue a college education. The grant will provide continued support to the Juntos 4-H program launched in 2015 while expanding the program to new markets in California and Illinois.

New Mexico Junior College Staff Get 3 Percent Pay Hike [Education News]

The New Mexico Junior College Board is giving staff members and hourly employees pay increases. The board voted to give staff members a three percent pay hike and hourly employees a 25 cent an hour spike. In addition, the board extended NMJC president Kelvin Sharp's contract to June 30, 2021, and increased his salary from $223,000 per year to $229,600 per year.
