At least one gunman opened fire at a Houston-area high school Friday, killing eight to 10 people, most of them students, authorities said. Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said he could not be precise about the number of deaths at Santa Fe High School, which went on lockdown around 8 a.m. Two suspects believed to be students were in custody.

Kansas Colleges Seek Tuition Hikes Even After Funding Boost [Education News]

State universities in Kansas are asking for permission to increase tuition again this fall even after legislators boosted their overall state funding to levels not seen for a decade. The six state universities and the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City have submitted proposals to the state Board of Regents to increase tuition and required fees for undergraduate students from 1.2 percent to 3 percent.

The 2018 Billboard Music Awards paid tribute to the students and teachers affected by recent deadly shootings in Texas and Florida, while the night also featured show-stopping performances by iconic singer Janet Jackson and K-pop group BTS. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos said Tuesday that decisions on whether to report undocumented students to authorities rest with local communities. But Lorella Praeli, director of immigration policy and campaign at the American Civil Liberties Union, said in a statement that a school taking such action would violate the U.S. Constitution's guarantee of education to every child.

15 Illinois Libraries To Share $724K In State Grants

Fifteen libraries across Illinois will share more than $700,000 in state grants to help pay for critical remodeling and renovation projects. Among the libraries receiving money are Benton Public Library District, Elmwood Park Public Library and Selby Township Library District in DePue. Several libraries are receiving money to help make facilities accessible to people with disabilities. Others will use the money for new roofs or HVAC systems.

Increased Amounts Set For New Mexico Lottery Scholarships [Education News]

The amount of per-student financial aid provided by scholarships mostly funded by New Mexico Lottery revenue is going up. The Albuquerque Journal reports that increases that exceed more than $1,100 for some students will result from additional funding provided by the state and a reduced demand for scholarships due to enrollment drops.

President Donald Trump is canceling the planned June 12 summit with North Korea's Kim Jong Un, citing the "tremendous anger and open hostility" in a recent statement from North Korea. AbbVie, a research-based global biopharmaceutical company, announced this week a donation of $100 million to two organizations, Direct Relief and Habitat for Humanity International, to strengthen access to healthcare and housing in Puerto Rico. The organizations will receive $50 million each. This donation is an extension of the more than $4 million AbbVie provided following the unprecedented natural disasters of 2017.
