Missouri Southern Faces $1 Million Penalty Amid Tuition Hike [Education News]

Missouri Southern State University is facing a $1.1 million state penalty after raising its tuition rates by 15 percent next year. The university's tuition and fees are slated to increase by $900 to nearly $7,000 during the upcoming school year, the Springfield News-Leader reported. Nearly all public colleges in Missouri are expected to raise their tuition next year, but only by 1 and 2 percent.

Feed the Children Expands Summer Food And Education Program [On A Positive Note]

Feed the Children is kicking off its Summer Food and Education Program in communities across the country to help combat the alarming number of children who do not have a stable source of nutrition during the summer months. The nonprofit is partnering with community organizations to hold meal sites at libraries, parks, camps, churches and schools and plans to provide up to one million meals this summer.

University Of Idaho Gets $750,000 Biofuel Research Grant [Education News]

The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded a $750,000 grant to University of Idaho researcher studying biofuels. The Idaho Business Review reports the grant to assistant professor Tara Hudiburg is part of a $115 million project involving 60 people in 17 institutions, aimed at creating a new generation of sustainable and cost-effective bioproducts.

Trump-Kim Shake Hands, Commit To 'Complete Denuclearization' [Beyond Education]

President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un committed Tuesday to "complete denuclearization" of the Korean Peninsula during the first meeting in history between a sitting U.S. president and a North Korean leader. Yet as Trump toasted the summit's results, he faced mounting questions about whether he got too little and gave away too much — including an agreement to halt U.S. military exercises with treaty ally South Korea.

Teachers Test Prep, an education company that helps aspiring teachers prepare for their state certification exams, is offering $10,000 to future K-12 educators through its 2018 Teachers Test Prep "Pass the Torch" Teacher Scholarships: one $5,000 scholarship to a recipient planning a career in elementary education and one $5,000 scholarship to a recipient planning a career in secondary education.

SDCCD Extends Tuition-Free Program [Education News]

The San Diego Community College District has extended their tuition-free program, the San Diego Promise, to include all recent high school graduates. Graduates that are first-time, full-time students will be eligible to receive two free years of college at San Diego City, San Diego Mesa and/or San Diego Miramar colleges.

USC Recruiting For Study To Explore Impact Of Culture And Genetics On Hispanics With MS [Education News]

The Keck School of Medicine of USC is actively recruiting Hispanics with multiple sclerosis (MS) to participate in a study examining the impact of genetics, acculturation and cultural perceptions on disease severity. The multicenter study, which is being funded by a grant from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, is recruiting 400 Hispanics who have been diagnosed with MS within the last two years.
