The University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas) has just reached milestone qualification for the state’s Tier One Fund. It is the youngest of the three institutions in the state to achieve this status. UT Dallas is now eligible for support provided by the state’s National Research University Fund (NRUF).

Teenager Creates Site Giving Children Answers On Deportation [On A Positive Note In Education]

A high school student has designed an online resource to help immigrant children and teenagers learn how to prepare for the possible deportations of parents or guardians. Sixteen-year-old Jody Bell said she came up with the idea after hearing firsthand the concerns of some close friends who were afraid to speak with guidance counselors or adults about their fears surrounding deportation.

California Students Flocking To Universities In Arizona [Education News]

Californians, including many turned away by public universities in their own state, are flocking to four-year state and private universities in neighboring Arizona. Four of the top five schools where California freshmen go out of state are in Arizona, according to 2016 data from the U.S. Department of Education.

Mouse Engineered, A Type Of Cancer

The University of Minnesota has received over $1 million in revenue over the last 15 years from a mouse that was engineered to help treat a type of cancer. Researchers use the mouse to study the genetics of a bone marrow cancer called multiple myeloma and create better genetic testing for myeloma therapy, Minnesota Daily reported . The mouse's plasma cells are used an antibodies to detect cancer cells.

Trump "Looking Into" 3D Guns Issue [Beyond Education]

President Donald Trump says he is consulting with the National Rifle Association over whether it makes sense for a Texas company to publish downloadable blueprints for a 3D-printed gun. Trump tweeted Tuesday he is "looking into 3-D Plastic Guns being sold to the public," adding that he "already spoke to NRA."

KU Sees Increase In Student Mental Health Needs [Education News]

A University of Kansas report shows an increase in demand for student mental health services. The Lawrence Journal-World reports that the university's Student Affairs department has found that counseling and psychological services had a total of 120 visits in May. That's up more than 73 percent from May 2017.

Update: Judge Blocks Release Of Blueprints For 3D-Printed Guns [Beyond Education]

A federal judge on Tuesday stopped the release of blueprints to make untraceable and undetectable 3D-printed plastic guns as President Donald Trump questioned whether his administration should have agreed to allow the plans to be posted online. The company behind the plans had reached a settlement with the federal government in June allowing it to make the plans for the guns available for download on Wednesday.

Providence, RWU Partner On English Teaching Program [Education News]

Rhode Island is expediting a program to certify more Providence educators to teach English as a second language. The program is a partnership between the Providence school district and Roger Williams University. One out of every three students in the city school system is learning English and yet only a third of the district's 2,000 teachers are specially trained to instruct these students.

UConn To Seek $79 Million More From The State [Education News]

The University of Connecticut is asking for $79 million more from the state to cover labor expenses and capital improvements. The Connecticut Post reported Wednesday the university Board of Trustees has approved a request from the chief financial officer for $234.3 million for the 2019-20 fiscal year, and $269.7 million in the 2020-21 fiscal year.
