NY University Offers Free Tuition For All Medical Students

In a move that is a first among major medical schools in the U.S., New York University (NYU) is offering all its medical students free tuition. Currently, NYU has raised more than $450 million to fund this new tuition package, but the school estimates that it will need around $600 million to fund it in perpetuity.

More Than 100 IU Students Living In Lounges As Dorms Filled

Indiana University’s record-setting beginner class has left 109 students living in residence hall lounges instead of dorms. A spokesman for IU said this is only temporary and that the University hopes to have all of these students in dorm rooms by the end of the semester.

Colleges Mull Pushing For Share Of Legal Wagering Proceeds

With the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision to allow states across the nation to have legalized sports betting, schools are exploring the idea of requiring sports book operators to pay them a part of amounts wagered on their games. The American Gaming Association, however, is opposed to these “integrity fees.”

DC Judge: For Now, No Need To Accept New DACA Applications

U.S. District Judge John D. Bates has put on hold a portion of his ruling regarding DACA. According to his ruling, the Trump administration must continue to process renewals for anyone already participating in the DACA program, but the administration is now not required to process new DACA program applications.

Logic Stages Immigrant Protest At VMAs With Parents, Kids

Protests against the separation and detention of families at the border were part of the MTV Video Music Awards on Monday night. More than two dozen immigrant children formed a “human wall,” and their parents simulated family reunions with hugs. Both the parents and the children wore T-shirts with the message “We are All Human Beings.” Three advocacy group’s immigrant leaders also participated in the demonstration.

Applications Being Accepted For Student Loan Debt Tax Credit

Applications for the 2018 Student Loan Debt Relief Tax Credit are currently being accepted in Maryland. Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible provided they have at least $20,000 in student loan debt, as well as at least $5,000 in outstanding student loan debt remaining.

22 Indiana College Presidents Call For Hate Crime Law

The University of Notre Dame, DePauw and Franklin, Hanover and Wabash, are among 22 private colleges and universities in Indiana whose presidents have signed a pubic letter calling for the General Assembly to pass a hate crimes law during the 2019 legislative session.

Illinois To Offer New Merit-Based College Scholarships

Illinois is taking a new approach to encourage high school students to attend in-state universities and colleges. By creating a new merit-based scholarship specifically for high school graduates, the state hopes to improve undergraduate enrollment at public universities, which fell more than 8 percent between 2011 and 2016.

Federal Government Awards $2.5M To 3 Kentucky Colleges

Hazard Community and Technical College, Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College, and Big Sandy Community and Technical College are being awarded $2.5 million in grants from the federal government. The three community colleges are planning to train a workforce for advanced manufacturing employers, and the project is expected to create 261 jobs.

Students Marching 50 Miles To Smith & Wesson HQ

Students are marching from Worcester City Hall in Massachusetts to the headquarters of gun manufacturer Smith & Wesson. This 50-mile march is to call for stricter gun control following recent school shootings and will end with a rally at the headquarters.

APNewsBreak: Complaint: Migrant Parents Coerced By Officials

According to a complaint provided to The Associated Press, dozens of mothers and fathers that were separated from their children at the border were coerced by U.S. immigration authorities to sign documents in English that they could not understand and in some cases gave away the rights to be reunited with their children because of it.

University Of Utah Reassigns Grad Assistant Over Gun Policy

The University of Utah has reassigned a graduate assistant who was teaching a class at the school because of statements she made about bringing a concealed carry gun to class. The grad assistant stated that it “is absurd, antisocial, and frightening behavior,” and that if any of her students brought a concealed carry gun to class, she would force them to stand in a “3x3 taped square.”
