6 New Scholarships Offered for High School Athletes [Education News]

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association says it has paired up with the state Department of Agriculture to offer six new scholarships for high school athletes who plan to study agriculture. The athletic association said in a statement that the six $1,000 awards will be presented in March to three males and three females who are named as the 2018 Kentucky Ag Athletes of the Year.

Fundraiser Aims to Send Foster Child to College [On a Positive Note in Education]

Three college-age friends have launched an online fundraiser designed to help a foster child pursue higher education. Robert Hall, of Elkins, and his friends Katie Hay and Mia Scanlon are working together with the common goal of supporting students in the foster care system. Last year, Hall and Hay raised $4,456.33 to benefit a college scholarship fund that will help a West Virginia foster child.

Union Institute and University Awarded Grant to Assist Vets

Union Institute and University in Cincinnati has been awarded a $150,000 grant from an anonymous foundation that aims to help veterans earn their college degrees. The grant will continue to fund living allowance stipends for honorably discharged, Pell Grant-eligible veterans working toward their bachelor's, master's or doctoral degrees at the school. Geri Maples, Union's veterans services coordinator, says education is vital to veterans' transition into the civilian world.

Kean University Awards Five Presidential Excellence Awards

Five dedicated Kean University employees received the institution’s Presidential Excellence Awards during a reception on June 23. Kean President Dr. Dawood Farahi bestowed the honor in recognition of their exceptional contributions in teaching, service and scholarship. The Kean University 2016 Presidential Excellence awardees are: Robin Landa, Dr. Marguerite Mayhall, Dr. Wolde Woubneh, Donna Lowe Alexander and Millie Gonzalez.

USM Center Gets Federal Grant to Help At-risk Students

The Center for Community and Civic Engagement at the University of Southern Mississippi has been awarded a $379,076 federal grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service to implement the Campus Link AmeriCorps Program. The funds will support the program for year one of a three-year cycle. Through Campus Link, 80 AmeriCorps members will tutor 4th-8th grade students in-school and after-school across South Mississippi.

Henry Ford College Nursing Students Hold Fundraisers for Belize Humanitarian Trip in December

A team of 14 Henry Ford College (HFC) nursing students and faculty members are holding fundraisers in late July and August to aid in funding their humanitarian trip to Belize on a mission of mercy in late December through International Service Learning (ISL). The nursing students will provide acute medical care and health education to vulnerable populations in Belize, a country located on the eastern coast of Central America. Belize is the only country in Central America where the official language is English.

Saint Mary’s College Collaborates With Cisco To Launch New Career Entry Internship Initiative

Saint Mary’s College of California and Cisco have formed ACES© (Accelerated Career Entry for Students), a unique multi-stage four-year internship program that provides career preparation opportunities for students, particularly students who are underserved and underrepresented in fields such as information technology. A cohort of Saint Mary’s students — many of whom come from diverse backgrounds — are participating in the pilot summer program, which began on June 6 and runs until Aug. 19, 2016.

Cleveland State: No On-campus Classes During Republican National Convention

Cleveland State University has announced it won't hold classes on campus during the Republican National Convention next week. The university has told professors to find others ways to teach, including off-campus meeting places, working online or assigning take-home work. University spokesman Will Dube (DOO'-bee) tells cleveland.com (http://bit.ly/29DJG4r ) the decision came after the Secret Service released details of its convention security plan last that week that included road closures.

University of Maryland, Baltimore Accreditation Extended 10 Years

The Middle States Commission on Higher Education (Middle States) has approved reaccreditation of the University of Maryland, Baltimore following a 30-month study of the institution’s standards, practices, and educational outcomes. Middle States is recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education to conduct accreditation activities for institutions of higher education in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, including distance education and correspondence education programs offered at those institutions.

Mosquito Traps to Be Deployed by New Mexico State University to Study Possible Zika Impact

New Mexico State University researchers plan to place mosquito traps across roughly two-thirds of the state to map the range of two species known to transmit Zika virus. Biologist Kathryn Hanley says researchers asked to do this project four years ago but funding agencies had little interest. The Albuquerque Journal (http://goo.gl/3iAygn ) reports that changed when Zika was linked to severe birth defects in Brazil and other nations in the Americas.

Michigan State University Gets $2M to Boost Bridge Research

Michigan State University is getting $2 million to enhance research on the nation's transportation infrastructure, specifically its bridges. The East Lansing school says a Lansing-area couple designated money from their estate to the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering to fund an endowed faculty chair with an emphasis on bridge research.

UC Davis Receives Unique, $1.5 Million Gift from Aggie Couple

The University of California, Davis, today announced a $1.5 million commitment from alumni Michael Hurlston ’88, M.B.A. ’90, M.S. ’91, and Joelle Hurlston ’89 to establish a first-of-its-kind endowed chair position benefiting three colleges and schools. The UC Office of the President will also provide a $500,000 matching fund through the Endowed Faculty Leadership Initiative, bringing total funding for the Presidential Chair to $2 million.

IURTC reports 43 licensing agreements in 2015-16 fiscal year

Officials at Indiana University Research and Technology Corp., which protects, markets and licenses intellectual property developed at Indiana University so it can be commercialized by industry, have reported a year-over-year 72 percent increase in licensing agreements. From July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016, IURTC completed 43 licensing agreements. There were 25 licenses in the previous fiscal year.
