Pennsylvania is starting a program proposed by state Treasurer Joe Torsella to provide college savings accounts for newborns, beginning with a $100 grant. Torsella said Monday the program will be open to any child starting next year who is a Pennsylvania resident at birth or adopted by a Pennsylvania family. Parents will be notified about the account set up for them.

VCU Awarded $2.7M Grant For Heart Failure Therapy Clinical Trial [Education News]

The National Institutes of Health has awarded a $2.7 million grant to Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of Pharmacy and Medicine. The grant will fund a clinical trial to evaluate the use of anti-inflammatory therapy to treat heart failure. Further investigation on reducing inflammation in heart muscle will be conducted by researchers.

The Grammy Awards are extending the number of nominees in its top categories from five to eight. The change comes months after the Grammys were criticized for the lack of women nominees at this year's awards show. For years, the organization has been called out for the lack of diversity when it comes to winners in the top four categories.

App Offering $10,000 Scholarship [Education News]

Bellhops, a tech-enabled moving service, announced that it will give away one $10,000 college scholarship. The company, which began as a college-based dorm-moving service in 2011, grew into a full-service moving provider powered by an online app. However, Bellhops' cofounder and president, Cam Doody, says the company hasn't forgotten where it started.

White House Faces Hard Deadline On Reunited Migrant Families [Beyond Education]

The clock is ticking for the Trump administration after a federal judge ordered thousands of migrant children and parents reunited within 30 days, sooner if the youngster is under 5. The hard deadline was set by U.S. District Judge Dana Sabraw. The order poses a host of logistical problems for the administration, and it was unclear how it would meet the deadline.

Most Regional Oklahoma Universities Plan For Tuition Raise [Education News]

All but one of the institutions in the Regional University System of Oklahoma will increase tuition this fall under fiscal 2019 budgets approved by regents. The budgets approved last week include increases in tuition and mandatory fees from 3.1 percent to 5.5 percent for five universities.

Cal State LA Awarded $1M Grant To Enhance Diversity [Education News]

California State University, Los Angeles (Cal State LA) has been awarded a $1 million grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) to enhance diversity and inclusion for California students in science. The grant is slated to start the Science Faculty for Inclusive Excellence and Transformation project to support students from historically underrepresented communities who are first generations and are working adults with families.

College Savings Plan Accounts Breached, $1.4 Million Taken [Education News]

State Treasurer Denise Nappier announced Wednesday that 21 Connecticut Higher Education Trust college savings accounts were recently breached, resulting in more than $1.4 million in unauthorized withdrawals. Nappier said her office was advised of the breach by TIAA-CREF Tuition Financing Inc., the program manager for the CHET Direct 529 savings plan.

California State University, San Bernardino’s (Cal State San Bernardino) Palm Desert Campus has launched a new campus radio station. PAWS Radio is the first radio station to be run by the staff and students at Cal State San Bernardino’s Palm Desert Campus, allowing students from all disciplines to obtain hands-on experience.

UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Florida donated $125,000 to support Latino Leadership’s programs that help families affected by Hurricane Maria relocate from Puerto Rico to Central Florida. Just days after the hurricane, Latino Leadership and the Florida State Hispanic Chamber of Commerce established the Puerto Rico Family Response Center to provide emergency relief and referrals for housing, employment, schools and health care.

UC Berkeley Extension Announces Global Alumni Partnership [Education News]

UC Berkeley Extension has announced that select courses in the accredited Certificate Program in Human Resource Management and in the Certificate Program in Marketing will be fully taught in Spanish to address the growing number of Spanish-speaking learners. Available completely online, these select courses will be adapted from their English-language equivalents and will begin September 2018. More courses will be added in Spring 2019.

Puerto Rico Seeks Statehood In Hurricane Aftermath [Beyond Education]

The island territory of Puerto Rico is making a new plea to become a state by no later than January 1, 2021. Representatives are pushing statehood due to concerns about unequal treatment of Puerto Ricans in the aftermath of Hurricanes Irma and Maria. The bill has been gaining bipartisan support and currently has 37 co-sponsors.
