Tuition Rising At 21 Of Oklahoma's 25 Higher Education Institutions

Tuition will increase at 21 of Oklahoma's 25 higher education institutions. The Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education on Thursday approved tuition and fees for each of the state's colleges and universities. Only the University of Oklahoma, Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Eastern Oklahoma State College and Murray State College did not seek a tuition increase.

Mexico Gives Leftist Lopez Obrador Big Presidential Win [Beyond Education]

Angry and frustrated over corruption and violence, Mexican voters delivered a tidal wave presidential election victory to leftist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, giving him a broad mandate to upend the political establishment and govern for the poor. An official quick count from electoral authorities late Sunday forecast that Lopez Obrador would win with between 53 percent and 53.8 percent of the vote.

Google will be coming to LaGuardia Community College in order for New Yorkers to achieve tech literacy and have more access to digital economic opportunities. LaGuardia is one of over 25 Community Colleges in seven states (CA, IL, MI, NY, OH, TX and WI) that are being funded through JFF, a workforce development nonprofit funded by Google.org.

Massachusetts OKs $8.2M To Aid Students Fleeing Hurricanes [Education News]

Massachusetts is releasing more than $8.2 million in education dollars to school districts that enrolled students who evacuated from Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Republican Gov. Charlie Baker said Monday the money to be released this week is the second installment of $15 million pledged by his administration to help support the costs of educating students who enrolled in Massachusetts schools after Hurricanes Maria and Irma.

Los Angeles Approves $10M To Help Separated Children [Beyond Education]

Los Angeles on Tuesday approved using a $10 million fund to provide legal help to children separated from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border. The City Council and county Board of Supervisors voted to expand the LA Justice Fund, created last year to help immigrants without violent pasts who are facing deportation.

The University of Virginia just inherited more than 400 presidential memorabilia items making it the largest private collection ever donated to their Center for Politics. The collection from Jack F. Christie contains items from both political parties and seven presidential administrations.

Students To Pay Hundreds More Per Semester To Attend Southern University System [Education News]

Southern University System students in Louisiana will pay hundreds of dollars more a semester in the upcoming school year, to generate $4.2 million for campuses, under a package of fee hikes approved by the system governing board Thursday. Fee increases on students are rankling lawmakers, who protected Louisiana's colleges from budget cuts for the 2018-19 school year by renewing part of an expiring sales tax last month.

Students In Florida School District To Get Free Meals [On A Positive Note In Education]

Thanks to Hurricane Irma, all students in one Florida school system will qualify for free breakfast and lunch through 2022. The Tampa Bay Times reports the federal Community Eligibility Provision program that offers meal assistance in low-income areas covered 17 of Hernando County's 25 schools last year.

Princeton And Stanford To No Longer Require ACT And SAT [Education News]

Princeton and Stanford universities are among the latest prominent schools to drop requirements on the ACT or SAT. The mandate no longer requires aspiring students to submit an essay score from the ACT or SAT. It can be strongly recommended that students submit an essay score from either test but it is no longer a requirement. This will be in effect for future students applying in 2019.

Official: 4 More Boys Brought Out Of Flooded Thai Cave [Beyond Education]

Four more of the youth soccer players trapped for over two weeks in a flooded cave in northern Thailand were brought out on Monday, an official said, bringing to eight the number extracted in the ongoing high-stakes rescue operation. After Monday's rescue effort, four boys and their coach were still inside the labyrinth cave.
