Hazard Community and Technical College, Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College, and Big Sandy Community and Technical College are being awarded $2.5 million in grants from the federal government. The three community colleges are planning to train a workforce for advanced manufacturing employers, and the project is expected to create 261 jobs.

Stockton University To Not Require SAT Scores For Applicants

ACT and SAT scores are no longer requirements for undergraduate applicants at Stockton University. Starting in fall 2019, the school will phase in a test-optional policy. Students accepted to Stockton will have the choice of either submitting their standardized test scores or taking a subject-specific exam for placement for math and writing courses.

US Government Advocate For Student Loan Borrowers Resigns

Advocate for student loan borrowers, Seth Frotman, has resigned from his position as student loan ombudsman with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Frotman was the government’s top official overseeing student loan market; student loan debt has ballooned to roughly $1.5 trillion this year.

California Closer To Making Colleges Offer Abortion Drugs

The California Assembly has approved a measure, which would require all public universities in California to offer abortion medication at the health centers on their campuses. This measure still needs to return to the Senate for a final sign off. If passed, this would make California the first state to have this requirement.

50 Years After Student Massacre, Mexico Students Strike

Students at Mexico's National Autonomous University in Mexico City, Mexico's largest university, went on strike today. Students were demanding an end to violence by groups of thugs. These groups often register but don't attend classes, and on Monday, thugs attacked protesters from a university-affiliated high school who were demonstrating for free speech and against fees.

There was an increase in hiring in the U.S. this past month with employers adding 201,000 jobs. The unemployment rate stayed near an 18-year low at 3.9 percent. These stats may indicate businesses and consumers will continue spending even though there are ongoing conflicts between the Trump administration and its trading partners.

Entergy Grants $2M To Louisiana College Engineering Program

Southern University in Baton Rouge has received $2 million from Entergy for the school’s engineering program. The money is slated to support lab upgrades and engineering classroom, as well as bolster faculty professional development and engineering curriculum and create internship programs.
