$10M Awarded To 6 CSU Campuses To Support Latino STEM Education

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded six California State University campuses $10 million to support Latino STEM Education fields. Fullerton, Northridge, Pomona, Sacramento, San Diego and Stanislaus are among the 31 colleges and universities to receive NSF’S first-ever grant program intended to increase retention and graduation rates for STEM students that are attending Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs).

Hurricane's Death Toll In Puerto Rico Put At Nearly 3,000

The death toll in Puerto Rico regarding Hurricane Maria has been raised to 2,975 by Puerto Rico’s governor, Ricardo Rossello. Previously reports had the number at 64. The new number is due to findings by researchers at the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University.

Preliminary US-Mexico Trade Deal Leaves Trail Of Uncertainty

The possibility of NAFTA being replaced by a new deal between the United States and Mexico has raised questions, regarding future trade. President Donald Trump announced on Monday that the U.S. has reached a preliminary new trade deal with Mexico. At this time, Canada is not a part of this preliminary deal. Can Canada be coaxed or coerced into a new deal?

The award-winning author René Colato Laínez has a very specific purpose for his bilingual/multicultural children’s book. Laínez writes on his website (http://www.renecolatolainez.com/), “My goal as a writer is to produce good multicultural children’s literature; stories where minority children are portrayed in a positive way, where they can see themselves as heroes, and where they can dream and have hopes for the future.” And so we are featuring in this month’s School Library the works of Laínez. As More Immigrants Wear Monitors, Effectiveness Is Disputed

Both advocacy groups and the government are opposing fitting immigrant families caught in the U.S. illegally with electronic monitoring devices. Government officials have said that once deportation proceedings begin, these devices lose their effectiveness. Advocacy groups have said the devices are inhumane and inappropriate.

Report: Personnel Issues At Migrant Child Housing Facilities

Inspections of 13 Southwest Key facilities that are housing migrant children separated from their families at the U.S.-Mexico border have revealed personnel records concerns, including personnel records with late applications for fingerprint clearance cards, as well as bedrooms that didn't give enough square footage per individual or didn't have privacy curtains.

APNewsBreak: Complaint: Migrant Parents Coerced By Officials

According to a complaint provided to The Associated Press, dozens of mothers and fathers that were separated from their children at the border were coerced by U.S. immigration authorities to sign documents in English that they could not understand and in some cases gave away the rights to be reunited with their children because of it.

US School Districts Weigh Duty To Youth Migrant Shelters

U.S. school systems are getting ready for the first day of school not just in their public schools but also in new classrooms that have been set up in youth migrant shelters. In San Benito, Texas, for example, the superintendent authorized sending 19 bilingual teachers, hundreds of computers and mobile classrooms.

DC Judge: For Now, No Need To Accept New DACA Applications

U.S. District Judge John D. Bates has put on hold a portion of his ruling regarding DACA. According to his ruling, the Trump administration must continue to process renewals for anyone already participating in the DACA program, but the administration is now not required to process new DACA program applications.
