Pope Apologizes to Abuse Victims, but Defends Chilean Bishop [Beyond Education]

Pope Francis apologized for insisting that victims of pedophile priests show "proof" to be believed, saying he realized it was a "slap in the face" to victims that he never intended. But he doubled down on defending a Chilean bishop accused of covering up for the country's most notorious pedophile priest, repeating that anyone who makes such accusations without providing evidence is guilty of slander.

Higher Education Student in US Illegally Free after Weeks in Custody

A University of California, Berkeley student has been released after nearly three weeks in an immigration facility near the U.S.-Mexico border. His attorney says Luis Mora was released unconditionally from the Otay Mesa Detention Facility on Wednesday. Officials say Mora overstayed his visa while visiting the U.S. from Colombia as a child and is not authorized to be in the country.

Pope Wraps up Chile Stop with Visit to Migrants, on to Peru [Beyond Education]

Pope Francis wraps up his Chile visit Thursday by meeting with members of the South American nation's booming immigrant community, who are flocking to the region's strongest and most stable economy but are increasingly the focus of political and social discontent. Francis is going to the northern city of Iquique before heading to Peru for the final leg of his two-nation trip.
