Fewer California Immigrant Students Seek College Assistance [Education News]

There's been a significant drop in applications for college financial aid by California students who are in the country illegally after being brought to the U.S. as young children. The Los Angeles Times reports that as of Monday 19,141 students had applied for aid under the California Dream Act, and the deadline is March 1. The number is just over half of last year's total.

The White House's Promised Spanish Website? Nada De Nada [Beyond Education]

The White House website still has no Spanish-language content, unlike during the two previous administrations and even though nearly 1 in 5 people in the United States speaks Spanish. In July, the White House director of media affairs, Helen Aguirre Ferre, said she expected a Spanish website to launch at the end of 2017. Now, she declines to say whether there are still plans to have a Spanish-language website.

Trump Prods Congress Amid Debate On Immigration [Beyond Education]

President Donald Trump warned Tuesday that it's now or never when it comes to extending protections for young immigrants living in the country illegally. Trump, in an early-morning tweet, said Congress must act now to provide legal protections to young "Dreamer" immigrants even as legislation faces an uncertain prospect in Congress.

Blackout Hits Northern Puerto Rico Following Fire, Explosion [Beyond Education]

An explosion and fire at an electric substation threw much of northern Puerto Rico into darkness late Sunday in a setback for the U.S. territory's efforts to fully restore power more than five months after Hurricane Maria started the longest blackout in U.S. history. The island's Electric Power Authority said several municipalities were without power, including parts of the capital, San Juan, but they were optimistic it could be restored within a day as they worked to repair a substation that controls voltage.

Pelosi Speaks For Record 8 Hours In Favor Of 'Dreamers' [Beyond Education]

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi staged a record-breaking, eight-hour speech in hopes of pressuring Republicans to allow a vote on protecting "Dreamer" immigrants — and to demonstrate to increasingly angry progressives and Democratic activists that she has done all she could. Pelosi spent much of the rare talkathon reading personal letters from the young immigrants whose temporary protection from deportation is set to expire next month.

Cuba State Media: Fidel Castro's Son Has Killed Himself [Beyond Education]

The oldest son of late Cuban leader Fidel Castro killed himself on Thursday after months of treatment for depression, state media reported. He was 68. Official website Cubadebate said Fidel Castro Diaz-Balart had been in a "deeply depressed state." A brief note read on state television said his treatment had "required an initial hospitalization then outpatient follow-up."
