A 2018 national survey found that over a third of university students out of over 20,000 surveyed said they were food insecure, or had had limited or uncertain access to food in the previous 30 days. And 36 percent of those students said they were housing insecure in the last year. About three-quarters of colleges and other postsecondary schools offer some kind of help.

Governor's College Credit Requirement Bill Fails In House [Education News]

A bill by Republican Gov. Bill Haslam that would require certain college scholarship students to finish 30 hours of credits annually has failed in the Tennessee House. The Republican-led House's 41-46 vote Monday dealt Haslam a defeat in the final days of his last annual legislative session as governor. Haslam has touted the proposal as helping push students toward graduating on time.

New Mexico Junior College Staff Get 3 Percent Pay Hike [Education News]

The New Mexico Junior College Board is giving staff members and hourly employees pay increases. The board voted to give staff members a three percent pay hike and hourly employees a 25 cent an hour spike. In addition, the board extended NMJC president Kelvin Sharp's contract to June 30, 2021, and increased his salary from $223,000 per year to $229,600 per year.

3 Nebraska Colleges To Hike Tuition, Room Rates [Education News]

Students can expect higher residence hall room rates and increased tuition at three Nebraska colleges. Mandatory fees, tuition and room and board rates will likely rise at Chadron, Peru and Wayne State Colleges in the fall. Chadron State and Wayne State are expected to raise mandatory fees by nearly $8 per semester for full-time students. Peru State's fees will increase by nearly $38 per semester for full-time students.

Northwest Iowa College Gets $6M Gift For Science Building [Education News]

Northwestern College says it's received a $6 million gift for its new science building, the largest single gift in school history. The $24.5 million building will be named for benefactors Jack and Mary DeWitt, who live in Holland, Michigan. The building will have classrooms, laboratories and faculty offices for the college's biology, chemistry and nursing department, as well as space for student-faculty research.

Alabama College Gets $1.5M Grant For Auto Tech Center [Education News]

An Alabama community college has been awarded a $1.5 million federal grant for its planned automotive technology training center in Decatur-annexed Limestone County. Decatur Daily reports the grant was announced Wednesday for the Calhoun Community College's center, which is expected to cost more than $7 million.

Purdue University To Extend Tuition Freeze Into 7th Year [Education News]

Purdue University plans to extend a tuition freeze it imposed in 2013 into a seventh year. Purdue President Mitch Daniels announced Thursday the school intends to hold tuition levels constant through the 2019-20 academic year on the West Lafayette campus. That will mean students there will continue paying nearly the same in tuition and fees as students did in 2012-13.

Arkansas Scholarship Lottery Exceeds Record With $53.5M Revenue [Education News]

The Arkansas Scholarship Lottery's revenue has exceeded its 2012 record of $51.4 million with last month's revenue total of $53.5 million. The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports that the lottery raised $7.9 million for college scholarships last month. A Powerball jackpot that hit $456 million and a Mega Millions jackpot reaching $521 million boosted the lottery's revenue for March.
