Trustees OK $1.7M For University Of Arkansas Medical Campus [Education News]

University of Arkansas trustees have approved a $1.7 million renovation at the school's medical campus in Fayetteville. Trustees on Monday unanimously approved the renovations to support classrooms and lab space for students in a new occupational therapy program, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported. The three-year, clinical doctorate program expects to enroll its first students in 2020, said Program Director Sherry Muir.

USC Recruiting For Study To Explore Impact Of Culture And Genetics On Hispanics With MS [Education News]

The Keck School of Medicine of USC is actively recruiting Hispanics with multiple sclerosis (MS) to participate in a study examining the impact of genetics, acculturation and cultural perceptions on disease severity. The multicenter study, which is being funded by a grant from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, is recruiting 400 Hispanics who have been diagnosed with MS within the last two years.

U Of I, Microsoft Help Students With Autism Pursue Careers [Education News]

The University of Illinois and Microsoft are launching a new partnership to help students with autism pursue science and technology careers. Microsoft is investing $200,000 in the Accessibility Lighthouse Program, which started Monday. Harold Javid of Microsoft says the partnership will use advances in technology to provide opportunities for students with a range of disabilities.

Indiana U Scientist Gets $9M To Further Animal-Human Organ Research [Education News]

An Indiana University scientist is getting a $9 million boost from a biotech company to further his research into ways to use animal organs in humans. The IU School of Medicine says Dr. Burcin Ekser's four-year grant comes from Silver Springs, Maryland-based Lung Biotechnology PBC. That company was founded in 2015 by United Therapeutics Corp. to address the acute national shortage of transplantable lungs and other organs.
