The award-winning author René Colato Laínez has a very specific purpose for his bilingual/multicultural children’s book. Laínez writes on his website (http://www.renecolatolainez.com/), “My goal as a writer is to produce good multicultural children’s literature; stories where minority children are portrayed in a positive way, where they can see themselves as heroes, and where they can dream and have hopes for the future.” And so we are featuring in this month’s School Library the works of Laínez. St. Mary's University Garden Helps Feed Low-Income Residents

A university garden is helping its Minnesota community. St. Mary’s University established its garden a year ago and is currently growing tomatoes, beets, potatoes, onions and asparagus. These produce are donated to the food shelter at Winona Volunteer Services and helps provide free food once a month to low-income residents.

Endowed Scholarship At Wesleyan For Land Institute Founder

Alumni from Kansas Wesleyan University have established the Conservation Endowed Scholarship. Created to honor the founder of The Land Institute, Wes Jackson, the scholarship will be awarded each year to a biology student at Kansas Wesleyan University that is in good academic standing.

As More Immigrants Wear Monitors, Effectiveness Is Disputed

Both advocacy groups and the government are opposing fitting immigrant families caught in the U.S. illegally with electronic monitoring devices. Government officials have said that once deportation proceedings begin, these devices lose their effectiveness. Advocacy groups have said the devices are inhumane and inappropriate.

Entrepreneurs' $4M Fund Offers Scholarships To Students

Wisconsin and Minnesota students have a new scholarship opportunity. Wisconsin entrepreneurs Marty Ryan and Richard Sterbenz have set up a $4 million fund, which will allow scholarships to be awarded annually to about 100 students. Those eligible include students attending a two- or four-year college.

Stockton University To Not Require SAT Scores For Applicants

ACT and SAT scores are no longer requirements for undergraduate applicants at Stockton University. Starting in fall 2019, the school will phase in a test-optional policy. Students accepted to Stockton will have the choice of either submitting their standardized test scores or taking a subject-specific exam for placement for math and writing courses.

Job News: Oklahoma Approves Record Number Of Emergency Teachers

The Oklahoma Board of Education approved 916 emergency certificates for non-traditionally trained teachers. This increases the total number of approved certificates to 2,153 for the 2018-19 school year. The state’s superintendent of public instruction has said that Oklahoma is "now experiencing the full weight" of the teacher shortage.

Report: Personnel Issues At Migrant Child Housing Facilities

Inspections of 13 Southwest Key facilities that are housing migrant children separated from their families at the U.S.-Mexico border have revealed personnel records concerns, including personnel records with late applications for fingerprint clearance cards, as well as bedrooms that didn't give enough square footage per individual or didn't have privacy curtains.
