Argentine Senate Rejects Legalizing Elective Abortion

Argentina's Senate on Thursday rejected a bill to legalize elective abortion, a defeat for a grassroots movement that came closer than ever to achieving the decriminalization of the procedure in the homeland of Pope Francis. Lawmakers debated for more than 15 hours and voted 38-31 against the measure that would have legalized abortion in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy.

Colorado College Reprinting Up To 9.2K Diplomas To Fix Typo

A Colorado university is offering to reprint up to 9,200 diplomas after the outgoing editor of the school newspaper found a big typo. Alec Williams was checking to make sure his name was spelled correctly on his Colorado Mesa University diploma when he noticed it said "Coard of Trustees" instead of "Board of Trustees" in Old English font.

For Now, Army Suspends Discharges Of Immigrant Recruits

The U.S. Army has stopped discharging immigrant recruits who enlisted seeking a path to citizenship — at least temporarily. A memo shared with The Associated Press on Wednesday and dated July 20 spells out orders to high-ranking Army officials to stop processing discharges of men and women who enlisted in the special immigrant program, effective immediately.

School Leaders, Students Stress Need For Mental Health Care

Wyoming education officials and students say increased access to health care for students is needed to keep schools safe. The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reports Michael Harris with the Fremont County School District told members of the Federal Commission on School Safety on Tuesday that several of his students share similar characteristics with man accused in the Florida high school shooting earlier this year.

ACLU Lawsuit Accuses US Of Wrongfully Denying Asylum

The American Civil Liberties Union sued the U.S. government Tuesday over its efforts to prevent immigrants from seeking asylum due to domestic and gang violence in their home countries. The ACLU's lawsuit asks a judge to invalidate Attorney General Jeff Sessions' June 11 decision to restrict the kinds of cases that qualify for asylum.

New Scholarship Offered To Community College Students

A new scholarship is available to students enrolled in the Kentucky Community and Technical College System. A statement from the school system says the 15 to Finish scholarship will pay $500 to students who successfully complete 15 credit hours in a semester and sign up for 15 hours the following semester.

Mississippi State Pledges Free Tuition For Guard Members

Mississippi State University is guaranteeing free tuition for Mississippi National Guard members studying full time for an undergraduate degree. University President Mark Keenum and National Guard commander Maj. Gen. Janson "Durr" Boyles signed the agreement Tuesday. University spokesman Sid Salter says Mississippi State receives $2,250 per guard member for tuition already.

Three federal judges have ruled against President Donald Trump's administration's efforts to end Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals.

Kennedy Center To Honor “Hamilton” Co-Creators

The Kennedy Center has announced their 2018 Honorees that will be honored at their 41st annual celebration of the arts held on December 2. Artists that will be honored at the ceremony include the co-creators of “Hamilton” Lin-Manuel Miranda, Thomas Kail, Andy Blankenbuehler and Alex Lacamoire, as well as Cher, Reba McEntire, Philip Glass, and Wayne Shorter.

Stockton University To Consider Buying Former Casino [Education News]

Stockton University is eyeing a purchase of a now-shuttered casino in New Jersey. The Press of Atlantic City reports the university's board of trustees is meeting Wednesday to discuss buying the closed Atlantic Club Casino Hotel. The Atlantic Club is located near the university's Atlantic City campus, which is set to open this month.

Mallinckrodt To Fund $10M In Research At Washington University School of Medicine [Education News]

Pharmaceutical manufacturer Mallinckrodt has announced plans to spend up to $10 million over five years to fund research at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the partnership will fund projects that have a focus on rare diseases. Mallinckrodt's Chief Scientific Officer, Dr. Steven Romano, says many underserved patients have "few, if any, therapeutic options."

Pro-government factions mobilized thousands of Venezuelans dressed in red — the color of the ruling socialist party — onto the streets of the capital on Monday in a bid to show the country remains united around President Nicolas Maduro after what the government described as a thwarted assassination attempt.
