Immigrants sued the U.S. government Wednesday over conditions at a federal prison in California used to house detainees since the Trump administration sought to toughen enforcement on the U.S.-Mexico border. The lawsuit filed in federal court in Riverside says harsh prison conditions at a medium-security facility in Victorville, California, are too restrictive for detainees awaiting their immigration court hearings, many who are seeking asylum.

State Standardizes Policy On Advanced Placement Exams [Education News]

New Mexico Higher Education Department announced plan to standardize credits for first-year college students who pass high school Advanced Placement exams. Under the new guidelines, high school students who earn passing grades in the courses and pass their course exam when the school year ends will get college credit when they enroll at a public college or university in the state.

UConn To Seek $79 Million More From The State [Education News]

The University of Connecticut is asking for $79 million more from the state to cover labor expenses and capital improvements. The Connecticut Post reported Wednesday the university Board of Trustees has approved a request from the chief financial officer for $234.3 million for the 2019-20 fiscal year, and $269.7 million in the 2020-21 fiscal year.

Providence, RWU Partner On English Teaching Program [Education News]

Rhode Island is expediting a program to certify more Providence educators to teach English as a second language. The program is a partnership between the Providence school district and Roger Williams University. One out of every three students in the city school system is learning English and yet only a third of the district's 2,000 teachers are specially trained to instruct these students.

A federal judge on Tuesday stopped the release of blueprints to make untraceable and undetectable 3D-printed plastic guns as President Donald Trump questioned whether his administration should have agreed to allow the plans to be posted online. The company behind the plans had reached a settlement with the federal government in June allowing it to make the plans for the guns available for download on Wednesday.
