UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Florida donated $125,000 to support Latino Leadership’s programs that help families affected by Hurricane Maria relocate from Puerto Rico to Central Florida. Just days after the hurricane, Latino Leadership and the Florida State Hispanic Chamber of Commerce established the Puerto Rico Family Response Center to provide emergency relief and referrals for housing, employment, schools and health care.

Suspect In Maryland Newspaper To Appear On 5 Murder Charges [Beyond Education]

First-degree murder charges were filed Friday against a man with a grudge against Maryland's capital newspaper after police said he shot his way into the newsroom, killing four journalists and a staffer and wounding two others. Ramos, 38, has a well-documented history of harassing the paper's journalists that began years ago after the Gazette reported about his criminal conviction in a harassment case.

PAWS Radio is the first radio station to be run by the staff and students at Cal State San Bernardino’s Palm Desert Campus, allowing students from all disciplines to obtain hands-on experience.

Pence Pledges Support To Venezuelans Until Democracy Returns [Beyond Education]

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence met with some Venezuelan migrants Wednesday and pledged that the U.S. will support Venezuelans who have fled their homeland until "democracy is restored" in the South American country. On Tuesday, Pence announced that the United States would give nearly $10 million more to support Venezuelan migrants, $1.2 million of which will go to Brazil.

Court's Ruling Hits Teachers Unions, But How Hard Is Unclear [Education News]

Teachers unions are hoping that recent grass-roots protests over pay and working conditions will blunt the impact of a U.S. Supreme Court ruling on union fees and help persuade dues-paying members not to abandon them. The court said in a 5-4 ruling Wednesday that government workers can no longer be required to pay fees to labor organizations that represent them in collective bargaining.

State Treasurer Denise Nappier announced Wednesday that 21 Connecticut Higher Education Trust college savings accounts were recently breached, resulting in more than $1.4 million in unauthorized withdrawals. Nappier said her office was advised of the breach by TIAA-CREF Tuition Financing Inc., the program manager for the CHET Direct 529 savings plan.

Cal State LA Awarded $1M Grant To Enhance Diversity [Education News]

California State University, Los Angeles (Cal State LA) has been awarded a $1 million grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) to enhance diversity and inclusion for California students in science. The grant is slated to start the Science Faculty for Inclusive Excellence and Transformation project to support students from historically underrepresented communities who are first generations and are working adults with families.

Most Regional Oklahoma Universities Plan For Tuition Raise [Education News]

All but one of the institutions in the Regional University System of Oklahoma will increase tuition this fall under fiscal 2019 budgets approved by regents. The budgets approved last week include increases in tuition and mandatory fees from 3.1 percent to 5.5 percent for five universities.

White House Faces Hard Deadline On Reunited Migrant Families [Beyond Education]

The clock is ticking for the Trump administration after a federal judge ordered thousands of migrant children and parents reunited within 30 days, sooner if the youngster is under 5. The hard deadline was set by U.S. District Judge Dana Sabraw. The order poses a host of logistical problems for the administration, and it was unclear how it would meet the deadline.
