Coach Who Shielded Students Among Shooting Victims [Education News]

A football coach who also worked as a security guard is among the dead in a school shooting that claimed 17 lives in Parkland, Florida. The football program at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School tweeted that assistant coach Aaron Feis died while selflessly shielding students. The tweet ended: "He died a hero and he will forever be in our hearts and memories."

Update: Trump Blames Failure To Report Student Accused Killing 17 [Education News]

An orphaned 19-year-old with a troubled past and his own AR-15 rifle was charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder Thursday morning following the deadliest school shooting in the U.S. in five years. "So many signs that the Florida shooter was mentally disturbed, even expelled from school for bad and erratic behavior. Neighbors and classmates knew he was a big problem. Must always report such instances to authorities, again and again!" Trump tweeted.

Suspect Wounded, SUV Stopped After Shooting At NSA Gate [Breaking News Beyond Education]

One person was wounded in a shooting Wednesday morning outside the National Security Agency campus at Fort Meade. Images from local news outlets showed authorities surrounding two handcuffed people after a black SUV ran into a barrier outside the Maryland base. Fort Meade garrison spokeswoman Cheryl Phillips confirmed that one person was wounded in the shooting and was taken to a hospital.

Fewer California Immigrant Students Seek College Assistance [Education News]

There's been a significant drop in applications for college financial aid by California students who are in the country illegally after being brought to the U.S. as young children. The Los Angeles Times reports that as of Monday 19,141 students had applied for aid under the California Dream Act, and the deadline is March 1. The number is just over half of last year's total.

The White House's Promised Spanish Website? Nada De Nada [Beyond Education]

The White House website still has no Spanish-language content, unlike during the two previous administrations and even though nearly 1 in 5 people in the United States speaks Spanish. In July, the White House director of media affairs, Helen Aguirre Ferre, said she expected a Spanish website to launch at the end of 2017. Now, she declines to say whether there are still plans to have a Spanish-language website.

Colleges In Vermont Prepare For Possible Mumps Outbreak [Education News]

The University of Vermont and St. Michael's College are taking steps to stop the possible spread of mumps on campus. UVM said in a letter sent out to students and staff members the university health lab is waiting for results on five possible mumps cases involving undergraduate students. WCAX-TV reports three cases of mumps have already been confirmed at St. Michael's College.

President Donald Trump warned Tuesday that it's now or never when it comes to extending protections for young immigrants living in the country illegally. Trump, in an early-morning tweet, said Congress must act now to provide legal protections to young "Dreamer" immigrants even as legislation faces an uncertain prospect in Congress.

University of Alabama Offers Free Books To Schools [On A Positive Note In Education]

The University of Alabama is continuing a book initiative to help out schools and communities in need. The Selma Times-Journal reports the Book Bonanza will provide over $12,000 of book donations for school libraries throughout Alabama's Black Belt region that are struggling financially. In addition, one other school from an economically disadvantaged area will receive books.

Marshall University Receives $2.1M Grant For Obesity Study [Education News]

Marshall University has received a $2.1 million federal grant to study obesity-related disorders. U.S. Rep. Evan Jenkins announced the U.S. Health and Human Services grant. He said in a news release it will be used to help fund research at the university's Appalachian Center for Cellular Transport in Obesity-Related Disorders.
