Battling Childhood Obesity in Hispanics, Still, by Frank DiMaria

In June of 2005, Hispanic Outlook reported on the health of the children living in Rio Grande City, a border town in Starr County, Texas, one of the poorest counties in the U.S. Most of the children living there were Mexican American, and at the time, their rates of obesity were among some of the highest in the nation. Unfortunately, little has changed in the past 11 years for the children of Starr County and for Hispanic children in general, according to Nancy F. Butte, Ph.D, professor of pediatrics, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas.

A new undergraduate program that integrates the study of engineering and business launched today at the University of California, Berkeley. The Management, Entrepreneurship, & Technology Program (M.E.T.) will be taught at Berkeley’s top-ranked Haas School of Business and College of Engineering. The M.E.T. Program is designed to give students a seamless understanding of technology innovation, preparing future leaders who will create real-world impact.

University of Idaho Eyes Partnering with Peru Potato Center

University of Idaho officials are negotiating a deal with the International Potato Center in Peru in hopes of getting access to the center's vast potato gene bank. Officials say the more than 4,000 potato varieties that include potatoes cultivated in the Andes thousands of years ago could help solve modern day problems such as late blight or a pest called potato cyst nematode.

Top 10: Which colleges save the most with free textbooks?

Rice University-based publisher OpenStax announced today the top 10 schools that have saved their students the most money through adoption of OpenStax free college textbooks in the 2015-16 academic school year. OpenStax textbooks have saved college students more than $68 million since 2012 and $42 million in the 2015-16 school year alone.

Cornell University Restricts Water Use as Drought Deepens

A severe drought in the Finger Lakes region has prompted Cornell University to restrict water use to ensure there's enough when students arrive in a few weeks. University officials say employees and students must decrease water use on campus by at least 30 percent. The city of Ithaca is also restricting water use, saying it could run out of water in 30 days.

UC Davis Has Best Fundraising Year in History

The University California, Davis, today announced having raised a record-breaking $226 million during the 2015-16 fiscal year, making it the largest donation total raised in a single fiscal year in UC Davis’ 108-year history. The UC Davis Foundation endowment saw better-than-industry-average performance during the fiscal year ending June 30, 2015, at more than double the policy benchmark rate for a single year.

Notre Dame Hosts Summer Camp for Aspiring Scholars

On a sunny summer day, about 25 young teens from South Bend are sitting in classrooms at the University of Notre Dame, working on skills including simplifying algebraic equations, writing in journals and analyzing the dramatic arc of a novel. In the afternoon, they'll be sketching the details of prehistoric artwork at the Snite Museum, touring a campus science laboratory or ice skating indoors.

Keck Foundation Supports New Biomedical Engineering Program

Cal State Fullerton has received a $300,000 grant from the W. M. Keck Foundation to develop an undergraduate biomedical engineering program with a medical device emphasis. The grant will support purchasing specialized lab equipment and developing curriculum for the new program, which will prepare students for careers as practicing engineers in the fields of biomedical engineering, and assistive and rehabilitation technology.

Niagara University Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program Receives CACREP Accreditation

Niagara University's clinical mental health counseling program has received accreditation from the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs. Accreditation by CACREP, which is a specialized accrediting body recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation, provides confirmation that the content and quality of an educational program has been evaluated and meets the highest standards set by the counseling profession.

The College Of New Jersey and PSE&G Cut Ribbon on Electric Vehicle Charging System

Officials from The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) and Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G) has marked the completion of a five-station electric vehicle (EV) charging system at the Ewing, N.J., college. The TCNJ EV charging system is located in the Metzger Parking Garage and is part of a PSE&G pilot program designed to help spur the adoption of electric vehicles in the utility's electric service territory.

Henry Ford College signs transfer agreement with the University of Michigan-Dearborn

Henry Ford College (HFC) recently signed a transfer agreement with the University of Michigan-Dearborn (UM-Dearborn) where students can transfer their credits toward an undergraduate degree in engineering at UM-Dearborn. It enables students to begin their education at HFC, earn an associate degree and then transfer to UM-Dearborn to complete their studies toward a designated undergraduate degree in Engineering.
