Committee Picks Design For Sandy Hook Victims Memorial

A committee in Newtown, Connecticut, has chosen a design for a permanent memorial to honor the pupils and educators killed in the 2012 shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School. It features a coiling wooded walkway leading past two natural ponds to a sycamore tree planted in the middle of a small man-made reflecting pool, which will be inscribed with the victims' names.

Update: University Board OK's Purchase Of Former Casino Near Campus

Stockton University's board of trustees has given approval for the purchase of a former casino site near a campus slated to open next month in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The university says the purchase agreement with Clearwater, Florida-based TJM Properties involves 11 upland lots totaling 9 acres (3.6 hectares), a beach lot that's 11 acres (4.5 hectares), a nine-level parking garage and a 23-story hotel tower.

Venezuela Ruling Party Cracks Down On Opposition Lawmakers

Venezuela's pro-government constitutional assembly stripped two opposition lawmakers of their immunity from prosecution on Wednesday, accusing them of having roles in a drone attack that authorities say was an attempt to kill socialist President Nicolas Maduro. The National Constituent Assembly voted unanimously to lift the protection for Julio Borges and Juan Requesens, who have seats in the opposition-controlled legislature.

Argentine Senate Rejects Legalizing Elective Abortion

Argentina's Senate on Thursday rejected a bill to legalize elective abortion, a defeat for a grassroots movement that came closer than ever to achieving the decriminalization of the procedure in the homeland of Pope Francis. Lawmakers debated for more than 15 hours and voted 38-31 against the measure that would have legalized abortion in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy.

Colorado College Reprinting Up To 9.2K Diplomas To Fix Typo

A Colorado university is offering to reprint up to 9,200 diplomas after the outgoing editor of the school newspaper found a big typo. Alec Williams was checking to make sure his name was spelled correctly on his Colorado Mesa University diploma when he noticed it said "Coard of Trustees" instead of "Board of Trustees" in Old English font.

For Now, Army Suspends Discharges Of Immigrant Recruits

The U.S. Army has stopped discharging immigrant recruits who enlisted seeking a path to citizenship — at least temporarily. A memo shared with The Associated Press on Wednesday and dated July 20 spells out orders to high-ranking Army officials to stop processing discharges of men and women who enlisted in the special immigrant program, effective immediately.
